How to Troubleshoot & Replace Lg AP5973402 / 6501KW2001B Rotor Position Sensor

I researched the code on the internet and found several places talking the problem part most likely was the LG Rotor Position Sensor in my washer. I tried the reset instructions LG provided - no luck. After watching several YouTube videos and researching the parts on various web sites, I decided to go with Appliance Parts Pros. Ordered the part online late Sunday night. Monday I received the order acknowledgement via e-mail. The part arrived on Wednesday afternoon via FedEx. The repair itself was easier than I thought it would be! I usually have that kind of luck where "something else pops-up" in the repair process, but not this time. The hardest part for me was getting the washer pulled-out to actually do the repair, cleaning out the space form a few years of dirt and dust accumulation, and getting the washer back into position. I purchased a new drum sensor control and paid extra for quicker shipping. The most difficult part of the repair was removing the central bolt that attaches the cover with magnets to the drum. Small wrenches were ineffective. I used a large plumbing wrench, and tightened the bolt slightly first, to break the factory tightened seal. The cover with magnets is heavier than expected, so keep a good grip when removing. Once off, the motor is easy to get to. I used an upturned bucket to rest the delicate motor while I replaced the sensor. These clips in simply. Reassembly was very quick and the 10 yr LG washer now works fine again.

The washer would indicate the load was too heavy, even when empty. The YouTube video showed it was most likely the Sensor Assembly. Appliance Parts Pros had the best price, and it arrived quickly. The power harness appeared to be in good shape, so the sensor went in. The back and rear rotor cover removed easily. Cleaned the plug contacts, and swapped out the sensor. Start to finish was less than 15 minutes. We're going to test it tomorrow, but I expect good things.

I replaced the hall sensor and the washer is working again. Very straight forward repair took about 30 minutes, including gathering tools and pulling the washer away from the wall. 

I took the washer completely apart to inspect the bearings and spider. Both seemed fine, I did take this opportunity to scrub the drum clean both inner and outer. Found a YouTube video of a guy describing a similiar problem to mine. He was able to fix his washer by replacing the motor postion sensor. It was an easy and cheap part to replace after having disassembled and re assembled the whole drum assembly the prior day. If I had known for sure what the problem was from the start it would have been a 15 minute job. I had no prior experience working on a wash machine. YouTube is awesome, and so are the folks at appliance parts pros. I had the part delivered on my doorstep in under 24 hours. Thanks! 

I replaced the Rotor Position Sensor. 

After doing a little research, I determined that the rotor position sensor was the problem. I found it on the Appliance Parts Pros website and placed the order. I watched the repair video on the website and staged my tools. Three days later my part arrived. I checked the time and started the repair. Within 20 minutes my machine was working again.
