How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6007373 / WP23748 Retaining Ring

Replaced the rear rollers (although they looked pretty good), the front glides, the belt, and the real culprit, the belt tension puley 

After removing the drum and belt, I used snap ring pliers to remove the retaining ring holding the pulley wheel in place. I removed the washer and then removed the wheel. I cleaned the shaft and surrounding area. I then put the new wheel on the shaft, replaced the washer and using the snap ring pliers, I placed the retaining ring to secure the wheel. Then I replaced the belt with the new one and put the dryer back together. Taking the dryer apart and putting it back together took the most amount of time. With the right tools, the project was simple. 

Replaced roller, axle, & washer. Reused Snap ring, but ordered it just in case. Probably only needed the roller, but replaced axle and washer to ensure I didn't have to do it again. 

I found one of the drum wheels broke of not allowing the drum to spin. Took about 15 minutes to replace the wheel and washers and it's back up and running. 

The belt, front glides, and tension pulley were in bad shape and needed to be replaced. Though they were in good shape, I also replaced the rear support rollers while I had the dryer open. I took my time and used an air compressor to blow out dust and debris and vac'ed it all up. When I was done everything was as clean as I could make it. It now works like new and is quiet as can be. 

After ordering these parts and another order for the idler wheel, I removed the motor/pump assembly from the washer (four bolts, two hose clamps, and motor electrical plug). Removed the idler tension spring. Inverted the assembly and removed the retaining clip and broken idler wheel from the tension arm (a pair of snap-ring pliers is helpful but not absolutely necessary). Replaced the spacer washers, idler wheel and retaining clip. Reinstalled the motor assembly and reattached the belt to the drum pulley. Reconnected the hoses and electric clip. Attached the idler tension spring to tension the belt. Test run washer. Works great.

In researching the problem on You Tube I ran across video by AppliancePartsPros.com. After viewing there how to replace/fix videos I felt sure enough of what the problem would be, ordered parts that I might need, (I had narrowed it down to belt tension pulley or drum support rollers). Three days later I had my parts in hand. Now I had never torn a dryer apart before, but about one and half hours after I started the dryer was repaired and drying clothes. Basic steps were: 1 remove front of dryer cabinet. 2 Loosen top of cabinet and tilt out of way. 3 Take a few quick photos of wire connections that needed to be disconnected. 4 Disconnect wires and remove lint trap and air flow chute from front of drum. 5 Undo belt from motor and lift drum out. 6 Determine bad part and replace. 7 Reverse all your steps to reassemble. REMEMBER SAFETY IS FIRST Unplug/Disconnect unit before attempting any repair. 

Replaced bad belt tension pulley. Replaced belt,drum support rollers, felt and glides as preventive maintenance.
