How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5983779 / W10083957V Dishwasher Food Chopper

After doing some research on my noisy dishwasher, I narrowed it down to either a broken chopper assembly or a bad circulation motor. After chatting with Robin, the APPros tech person, she confirmed that my chopper assembly was broken. I ordered the new chopper, paid for the cheapest shipping and was absolutely shocked to see it arrive the next morning!! I went ahead and installed it, and ran the Glisten Cleaner. Not only did the dishwasher run quiet again, the Glisten made it look like it was brand sparkling new inside. 

Replaced the Chopper Assembly, great service, received the piece within two days, great video tutorial. The dishwasher is now cleaning normally and back in action! 

I replaced the chopper assembly & the check valve. Quick fix with great results. 

I ordered the new assembly after watching the video on how simple it was to replace, and figured I could do it. I had been taking the racks out, removing the spray arms and the assembly cover every so often to use a toothbrush and clean the gunk off the metal mesh behind the broken chopper blade so the water could flow freely to the upper level. This of course was quite a hassle, but I really did not want to replace the dishwasher, nor pay a lot for a service call, then wait for the part to come in, then pay another service fee. for something I knew I could do myself One of the things I have always done with dishwashers is not to use the heat dry setting as I believe that really does a number on the machine. It is about 8 years old and is run at least every other day with a full load/ and now works great. 

The old chopper was the only thing I saw that might make that type of noise. I plugged the motor back up and tried it by itself and it was quiet. The new chopper seemed to look and work exactly like the old one with the exception of the spring tension. The new chopper had a stronger spring so I hoped for the best and installed the new one. I'm a home owner, not an appliance repair man but that was the problem. It's quiet again thank goodness! 

I bought a new part , it didn‘t take much to replace. I goggled a repair video. The good thing was that no one else had the part . I found it on this web site!! 

Clean food chopper screen.. ordered new part , old part , fell apart. 

The food chopper was sheared off and the screen was packed with debris. The top rack spinner was also clogged. The dishwasher is cleaning like it did when it was new after these repairs. Most difficult part was getting the new food chopper lined up and installed. 

Installed the new chopper and re-assembled the washer. Broke the rack stop clip and used a new one 

After ruling out other possibilities suggested by Appliance Parts Pros., I found that the food chopper blade had disengaged from the shaft and was heavily clogged with debris. Ordered the appropriate part for my dishwasher and installed it as per instructional video. It was a breeze!
