How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6030643 / W10884390 Refrigerator Ice Maker Assembly

A bit of online research and some component testing narrowed my issue down to either a faulty ice maker or a bad supply valve. Appliance Parts Pros had both of these, at reasonable prices, so I purchased and replaced both items. I recommend watching online videos to get a sense of what to do, and how to go about doing it. The repairs were relatively easy, other than this being a bottom freezer model hence the ice maker was difficult to access: I removed the freezer door (four screws) to get closer, but never did figure out the slide-out shelf/basket component removal. I wish I had a magnetized nut driver for all the times I dropped the ice maker screws! At least the water valve was an easy swap. 

Ordered the part from appliance parts pro using refrigerator make and model. Found the best price here. The part came within a few days, replaced the part using YouTube, believe it or not. Freezer is making ice again as I'm writing this review. I believe we saved hundreds of dollars doing it ourselves! What took so long to fix was the fact we had to remove the freezer drawer to gain better access to replace the part. 

Replaced water valve and ice maker 

Replaced ice maker assembly. The assembly included the module portion of the ice maker. The module had burned at the contact for the heater element. The element tested good. The new assembly also came with the heater element. Amazingly the module by itself priced at $90.00 the assembly priced out at $40.00. I ordered another assembly for a future repair as this issue is a common problem with my refer. The refer is only 3 years old. Kitchen Aid. 

Replaced ice maker. Simple to do. Removed one screw under the ice maker and loosened two screws on which the ice maker was hanging. Lifted the ice maker out and unplugged the electrical connector. Reversed this procedure to install the new ice maker. 

Found a few YouTube videos suggesting possible fixes. After attempting a number of the fixes it became apparent the only remaining solution was replacing the icemaker itself. One YouTube video on how to replace the device convinced me that it was a repair I could attempt myself. 

Ordered and received the replacement ice maker; allowed the unit to defrost overnight. Gently rocked the door back and forth until the ice broke loose and the door opened. I had read several posts online not to force the door open or it would be damaged. I watched a couple of youtube videos, pretty straightforward repair. It took an hour or so for the ice maker to cycle through before it started making ice. Once it started the ice maker continued until ice bucket was full. The most difficult part was removing the door, all the trays and shelves to get to the ice maker. 

Tried a number of tests found on YouTube to isolate the problem. Ice maker was getting water so not the valve solenoid. Tried to jump start the full cycle crossing T & H but that did not work. Decided to order the replacement ice maker from this site. W10884390 (AP6030643) Install was fairly removing door from bottom freezer shelf. Removing bottom basket from slides. Removing top drawer then installing new ice maker. Within hours new ice was being made! Did not have to adjust water flow. Cube size was perfect. Within 36 hours ice bin was full. Really glad I purchased here. Good price and saved a ton over what it would have cost to have a reapairman come in. Thank you AppliancePartsPros! 

Ordered ice maker and valve. Parts came in less than one day! I believe only ice maker was broke, but couldn't prove valve worked by shorting terminals on ice maker front panel. I realized later the fridge wasn't sending power to ice maker due to some condition (door needed to be closed maybe?). Recommend spending time to remove door and shelves to better get to the ice maker, which is difficult to reach screw locations. Dropping screw in ice maker forced me to undo everything to fish it out. Everything worked fine after replacing ice maker and valve. New ice maker seemed higher quality than original ice maker. New ice maker came with everything but the screws to attach it to inside of freezer. Took me awhile but i'm not that mechanically inclined. 

Only difficult part was getting at the three screws that hold the unit in the bottom freezer. I used a screwdriver and a mirror to view them. A socket wrench or socket screwdriver would have made it much easier. The replacement icemaker was OEM and was plug-and-play.
