How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6011817 / WP8182634 Washer Door Lock Switch Assembly

Small black plastic push button on door had broken off. New door switch unit was simple to install from front of washer. Also realized the door seal gasket had been missing since we bought the place, so was constantly needing adjustment. So putting a clamp on fixed that problem as well. Videos online helped make the entire repair take only 15 minutes (need a T20 driver). Also, I ordered Saturday afternoon and parts came by noon on Tuesday (standard shipping was Fedex!). All in all, could not be simpler! 

I unscrewed the latch on the outside. Then peeled back the drum boot to have access to the wires on the latch. Unplug the wires. Plugged in the new latch, reattached the boot. I had to remove the retaining clamp with pliers to get it back in place and then placed the clamp back on. Tightened the screws on the latch and it worked great. 

Installed new door locking mechanism assembly. 

2 shock absorbers and door latch busted due to intense vibration. Washer "walked" 2 feet. Replaced all shocks and door latch. Video's were highly valuable but not what I experienced. Shocks on video have 2 clips to engage which the video showed enough room to toggle with a small screwdriver. My washer (the same in video) only had 2 inches on the front shocks to work with. Since I was replacing, it was easier to use an adjustable wench to twist and break plastic mounts instead. Saved loads of time. Video on door latch had technician accessing through washer boot. I felt that boot could easily rip and opted instead to access latch from the top of machine. Wiring had a memory which facilitated plugging plugs back in! Could include these tips in video. Your company gave me great service and shipping. The higher price of the OEM parts was worth the information and parts availability. Great Company. Thanks, Dave A. 

Replaced striker, discovered that the original was broken due to the latching mechanism, even though close inspection of the latch ass'y showed nothing wrong. Replaced latch asm and all was well. Take away from this is that if you suspect either the striker OR the latch then replace both. Happy suds day! 

By replacing the door switch assembly. When I went in to fix the pause button I found that the plastic part that holds the button had broken off, I glued it back together so I did not need the new button. Every thing is working now. Thanks

AppliancePartsPros made it easy to narrow the problem so I ordered a new drain pump. Since the company is 50 miles from me I got the parts just 2 days after I ordered them. The washer door wouldn't open so I had to replace the door switch after it jammed. Helpful videos made the whole replacement go well in about 40 minutes. Actually took more time to clean up the spilled water inside the frame and on the floor than replace the parts thanks to the videos. I've used APP to get parts for a stove in the past & will look to them first in the future. 

The repair went smoothly thanks to the videos that Appliancepartspros provided. Tools needed were needle nose pliers and a #20 torx driver. The job took me about 1-1/2 hours just because I do not have experience. Next time it won't take as long. I estimate it might take someone with experience about an hour.
