How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6005653 / WP18776 Top Lock

Located model number and went to Appliance Parts Pros.com to check the repair instructions on belt and motor. Used the suggestions to diagnose problem as a broken belt. I also ordered two top locks to replace the originals that were very brittle plastic that broke when I opened the dryer. Ordered the parts on Presidents Day, and received the parts the next day. The dryer was back in service in 24 hours. 

Disassembled per video then discovered that the drum support wheels were worn and jammed, plus the drum front seal excessively worn, and rear fabric "gasket" mostly gone. Changed drive belt at same time, since that would be next to fail, most likely. Runs great now. The hardest part surprised me...was gluing the rear drum fabric gasket strip onto the drum. 

Ordered the parts as explained in the video for drum rollers. While there, and due to the age of the dryer, also replaced the drum belt, and idler pulley, and the gasket at the back of the drum since the old one was cracking and dry rotted. 

Replaced the timer, and the dryer works great. Wasn't always keeping time, so it would just keep running. I highly recommend AppliancePartsPros.com.

Scrape off old gasket seal, and apply new one per instructional video. 

Replaced door switch 

I replaced the parts in the drum (4 of them), Belt and motor flywheel kit. 

Replaced dryer belt, idler pulley, and top lock. 

The repair video is very good. The putty knife kinda worked to open the top lid. However, I broke both front brittle plastic clips. The replacement metal ones are much better. The Rear Drum Support Roller Kit bag had a hole in it and was missing one of the triangular plastic retaining clips. My local hardware store had a 1/2" steel E-clip that worked fine. The bushing inside the roller is a centered bearing. This style bearing must be soaked overnight in a light turbine oil. I used a turbine oil with Teflon made for skateboard wheels. Once the bushing material has fully absorbed the oil, it will stop foaming & it's lubricated for life. Now, take rubbing alcohol & a paper towel and remove all traces of the oil on all surfaces. Not doing this oiling procedure is probably why people are reporting multiple bearing failures shortly after installing these rollers. I cleaned & soaked the centered bushing in the belt tension idler pulley too. Then I put on a new belt just because I had the old one out. I also took the rest of dryer apart and vacuumed out the accumulated lint in it and the vent hose system. The dryer now runs smoothly & quietly.
