How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6012990 / WP8537433 Agitator Cam Kit

As always, I went to my computer to my favorite site, Appliance Pros.com and found just what I needed to replace the Agitator Cam and Dogs. As always, they had my parts to me in just a few days and I was back up and running. This is the best site... 

Replaced just the pawls 

I entered my washing machine make, model and problem and found the correct video. I followed the video instructions and found the problem on my machine. I ordered the parts and easily replaced them. Your resources and parts saved me $$$$$$. 

The bolt that holds the agitator and the agitator cam was rusted in place so it made the project way more difficult than it should have been. Had to cut the agitator off the shaft and cut the head of the frozen bolt off. Thankfully, Appliance Pros had all three parts I needed. Once the parts arrived it only took ten minutes to fix. Since the house was going to be full for Christmas, the fast shipping really, really helped. Was able to get it done before the guests arrived. 

Changed the cam kit. 

I checked online for similar problems, and found many that said it was probably the agitator cam. I took mine out and could see that it was worn. I ordered a new one, and installed it. It only took one bolt. The washer now works better than it has in years. 

Removed top half of agitator. Removed one bolt with a socket and socket extension. And inserted new cam kit. 

Discovered the upper agitator wasn’t properly turning during wash and rinse. Took off the fabric softener dispenser and found out the agitator dogs wore out, along with someone rigged the cam by screwing it in the agitator. Ordered a new cam kit along with a new agitator bolt, took out the old cam, bolt and screws, cleaned everything out, installed the new agitator bolt and cam kit that literally only took minutes. Tested everything out and the agitator works as it was designed 

I did it myself and everything went well. Thank you for your delivery in such a timely manner. 

The most difficult part of the repair was removing the original agitator bolt. The bolt head was severely rusted away/ Since the bolt sits down inside the spring retainer I a socket is really the only option. First I picked away as much loose corrosion as possible and then found an undersize socket I could drive securely over the corroded head. Applying as much down force as possible I was able to back out the old bolt. Ordered the replacement kit (complete) and a new bolt on Wed. Parts were delivered that Friday. Since I had already cleaned up the agitator (removed old soap scum) it took less than 15 minutes to put it all back together.
