How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6016528 / WPW10185286 Surface Element Infinite Switch (Top Burner Control)

Part was very easy to replace, it only took 15-20 minutes. Worked great after that. 

Disconnect power removed 8 screws to remove glass cooktop, disconnected three wiring harnesses. Swapped burner. Two screws and two connections on back of switch. Replaced everything. Success. 

Replaced the infinite control switch. 

First, have someone available to help hold the control panel once it's been removed so you can work on it with two hands. 1.) Shut off breaker to stove. 2.) I had to pull the stove out approx. 2" so I could access screws on the sides of the control panel. 3.) Removed 2 - phillips head screws on sides and 4 - 1/4" nut head screws on the bottom of the front control panel. 4.) Pulled knob off the front of switch. 5.) Unplugged the two wire plugs that were attached to the back of the switch. 6.) Remove two screws on the front of the panel that hold the switch in place. 7.) Insert new switch and attach with two screws. 8.) Plug in two wires. 9.) Re-attach control panel to the front of the stove with screws. 10) Put knob back on switch. 11.) Turn power back on and test. 

Ordered new infinite switch which arrived in about 3 days. To replace, turn off circuit breaker to stove, open oven door, remove 4 hex screws at bottom of front panel and a phillips screw at each end. Let panel hang held by all the wires. Remove 2 phillips screws holding old switch. Pull off 2 wiring brackets, noting the one with less wires goes onto switch side with fewer metal connections. Reverse sequence using new switch. Whole repair took less than 20 minutes. 

Unplugged it and installed new switch. 

I had to replace the control board to stop the clicking but the infinity switch was beginning to develop a short (was getting warm to the touch) so I replaced it too. All I had to do was take out a few screws, pop the old one out and put the new one in. Easy. 

I replaced the burner and the switch. I first attempted to replace the switch but found it did not resolve the concern. After replacing the burner, I installed the old switch but it did not operate correctly, so the switch I purchased was re-installed and everything works great.
