  • Restores full range of settings across the knob from simmer to full power
  • Helps resolve intermittent heating caused by worn internal contacts

  • Disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the range before servicing

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Surface Element Infinite Switch (Top Burner Control) (Part Number: OEM18049593)

Tim, The manufacturer does not recommend this for your model. Although the pin out and the amp draw all appear the same the orientation of the cam, shaft & knob are likely the differences. You are welcome to try it but there is no guarantee it will work for your model and since it is not recommended for your model there would be no warranty or returns.

Steve .L., Thanks for the question!!! The part revisions would not make any difference. The revision is often quality and reliability improvements. I see that the part number you have is not the correct part for your model based on information from the manufacturer. The correct part for this model number is WPW10185287.

Richard, unfortunately, the only accurate way to test the infinite switch WPW10185286 would be to perform a voltage test. With the switch secured to the console and the console positioned safely, the 6 terminal side would be tested from the two outer terminals for 240VAC when set to dual heat. If there is 240VAC the switch would be good. If voltage testing is not preferred, a resistance check of the element can be done using the wires that connect into the 6 terminal spot. From the red wire to the yellow wire, there should be a resistance of 38-42 Ohms. From the red wire to the tan wire should measure 34-37 Ohms. If the element tests good, the switch would be the cause of failure. If the element W10823722 does not test good, it would need to be replaced.

Richard, as the switch WPW10185286 does not have markings, the model number would be necessary. If the model could be provided in a new post, this will allow the most accurate information to be presented.

Patel for Model Number JES9900BAS

I have a Jenn-Air range model JES9900BAS and I have taken out the right front burner (dual burner) switch and it reads WPW10185286, I did this because the right front burner stopped working. One of my friends told me, it could be the switch or it could be an element. He said first test switch as it is easy to remove and test. So I removed the switch and also I was able to locate the switch on your website. But before placing an order, I want to make sure that switch is bad or good. If bad, I can order. But the question is how to test the switch. Can you please tell me step by step how to test it? I do have a multimeter. Thanks

1 Answer

Hello Patel, You will need to remove the wiring from terminals S1 and S2. Measure the voltages from terminals S1 and S2 at LO, MED, and HI. The reading from S1 to S2 should read about 240Vac. If so, the issue is the element. If not, replace the infinite switch WPW10185286.

Mehdi, unfortunately, as the manufacturer has discontinued the dual element 74008228 and not provided an approved substitute, we would not be able to guarantee the proper operation of an alternative.

Tom for Model Number Jennair smooth top downdraft electric range JES9900BAB

My front right dual burner stays on full hot. I have replaced both the element and the rotary switch with no change. What else can I do? There is a thermocouple that seems to be fine (correct resistance) on both the old and new element. This is not a typical infinite switch. It is different that the others on the range: Infinity Switch, Front Right, Dual: WPW10185286. The thermocouple leads plug into the back of the switch.

1 Answer

Tom, The infinite switch would be the cause of the unit going straight to high when it is turned on. The only other factor would be wiring that is faulty but the switch that would be needed is S97020054.

Rick for Model Number JEC 9530 BDS

Large right front burner / dual element no longer heats up. Control knob still generates a red light to indicate the knob is ON, its interface with overhead vent still activates the vent. the dual element / switch used to make clicking noises---I would turn the knob a little bit and the noise would stop. I kinda think the switch is bad, but don't know for sure, so am considering buying both switch and dual-element. when parts arrive and tech opens up cooktop---he maybe then can determine/test which part (or both ?) is defective. atleast I will have both available...and return whichever (unopened) part I do not need. What are the correct part numbers for the dual element and appropriate switch for my specific JEC 9530 BDS. this unit is probably 15 yrs old.

Rick, unfortunately, the dual burner element 74008228 has been discontinued by the manufacturer and is no longer available. The burner infinite switch is part number WPW10185284 for your model.
