How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6011545 / WP777811 Trash Compactor Directional Switch

I thought directional switch would shut it off 

Using old switch, I would stop ram when it hit top. which is past home position. Put new switch in. didnt work because ram was past home. hitting top of unit. couldnt figure how to reverse ram. was going to pull out new switch and manually depress lever to try. decided not to cause its still plugged in. dont forget to unplug. need basket in. i put old switch back in, can reverse it with on-off switch. with basket still in, lowered ram and stopped it about half way. put new switch in. its working perfect. moral of story, make sure you can see ram part that triggers switch thru the hole. and the lever is resting on it. Had to replace three button activation switch. 

I followed the YouTube posting by Appliance Parts and changed out the Directional Switch which starts and stops the box that crushes the trash. It took less than 30 minutes. Compactor is now working just like it did when it was brand new.

The owner's manual lists two items that can cause this problem and your site gave me the percentage that the switch was 74 percent the cause of the problem 

I replaced the upper-end Directional Switch for $45. 

Ordered a new reverse direction switch. The part came very fast. Install it and it's working like new! 

Took a few tries to rule in or out the correct switch. As it turns out we also had a foot switch problem. So fix one, then find out the second switch was also faulty.
