How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6016536 / WPW10185971 Defrost Timer (162-4)

Ordered new one. Two day delivery. 10 minute remove and replacement. 

Replaced the timer, 

I had a repairman come out to work on another appliance and I had them take a look at the Dryer. They quoted me $385 plus tax to repair. Yeah, Right ! I went online and found Appliance Parts Pros.com. The video on the site indicated what I thought was going to be an easy repair and they had the parts in stock. It took me roughly 30 min to install and test the new part. Well worth the time and effort to DIY and save a few hundred dollars in the process. 

Replaced cycle timer. 

I tested the door latch & the start button to see if they were working , I did this by taking the top back panel off , then I closed the door & put the plug back in , then I turned the timer & heat control dial to a on setting then I pushed the on button and you could here and see the timer was working ! The timer has a small sight glass that spins when it's on ! But the control knob was not engaging , so I took the control knob apart , this is when I found that one of the three washers was cracked , These washers engage all the electric points in the control knob ! So I ordered the parts , and they arrived in a day in a half , fast ! It took all 25 minutes to in stall the new control switch ! I also bought a new power button , did not need it , but I'll keep on the shelf ! 

I ordered the part and it came in a day and a half. My 11 year old granddaughter replaced the timer under the supervision of her dad! 

We followed the order you suggested in testing things that might be wrong. Through the process of elimination, we decided it was the timer and ordered that part. That was the problem, and a simple problem to fix.
