How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6016830 / WPW10197428 Compressor Start Device

Replaced start relay and run capacitor 

My fridge was clicking and not cooling. I did some research and it sounded like it was likely the start relay. I ordered 2 different parts initially from other websites that said they would fit but did not. I found this website and searched for the part, did a live chat with someone who confirmed it was correct and it worked perfectly! Very pleased! Easy fix once I had the right piece. 

Used the site to troubleshoot. I then used the helpful videos to learn how to replace the part. Saved lots of money over getting a new appliance. I will use this site again because it was helpful 

By watching the videos on how to replace individual parts it was easy for me to zero in on the Compressor Start Device & Run Capacitor. I ordered those 2 parts, replaced them and everything is back to normal. 

Previous experience with Whirlpool equipment led me to rapidly plug/unplug the appliance. After 6-8 repeats compressor started, at which point I confirmed a capacitor/relay failure. I ordered the parts from AppliancePartsPros.com. The parts arrived and were installed. The refrigerator works like new. 

First I tilted the fridge to access and clean the coils which are located along the bottom of the unit. After a good cleaning the fridge still wasn't cooling at all. It would turn on for a bit and then there was a clicking sound every few minutes. It was the compressor shutting off. I did some research and the most likely problem was the start relay on the compressor went bad. So I ordered a new one from here. It arrived very quickly which was a nice surprise. I disconnected the old one and put the new one in. Everything is working great now! 

Actually a neighbor did the research, identifying the possible parts needed. After I ordered and received them he replaced them and it worked. The nut driver was used to take the panel off the back to access the parts. I couldn’t have done it alone. (I couldn’t even pull it away from the wall.) And he found the parts on your site. That was the hardest part. I live in the country and couldn’t get a repairman to come out here. Other option would have been to order a new one from 75 mi away. So far so good. 

I watched a video and read other people’s stories on this site and determined it was the compressor start relay. Ordered the factory replacement part. I installed it in minutes and it was fixed. 

Replaced the capacitor and relay. Only had a minor problem reinstalling the spring clip. 

I replaced the capacitor and the compressor start device and that seemed to do it! No more clicking and it's not running all the time. I watched the videos for the parts. The new parts looked slightly different than the parts in the fridge, but everything connected right and this site said they were compatible so I went with it. I should have looked more carefully where the metal clip was hooked on before I removed it because my model was a bit different than the videos and it took a little bit to find just the right spot. Overall, it took longer to take breakable/heavy stuff out of the fridge and clean under/behind the fridge and around these parts than it did to actually do the replacement. Hoping this keeps the fridge lasting longer! I'll always take repair over replace.
