The Compressor Start Device is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is responsible for starting the compressor, which is crucial for the refrigeration cycle. The start device provides the necessary electrical current to initiate the compressor's operation, ensuring that the refrigerator maintains the proper cooling temperature.

You should replace the compressor start device if it becomes faulty. Causes of a bad start device can include electrical failures, wear and tear from regular use, or damage from power surges. A malfunctioning start device can prevent the compressor from starting, leading to cooling issues in the refrigerator.

Symptoms of a bad compressor start device include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or at all
  • The compressor not running or making a clicking sound as it tries to start
  • Unusual noises coming from the compressor area
  • The refrigerator cycling on and off frequently

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Compressor Start Device (Part Number: OEM18050499)

Eki for Model Number W10749399A

I hear a clicking sound at the back of my Whirlpool W10749399A 26 cu ft French door refrigerator freezer and the lights are not on and the refrigerator freezer is not running/cooling (no compressor sounds). This sometimes happens after a power failure on restart - other times it is very intermittent - ie. once a month maybe. I can unplug the unit for a few minutes and get the clicking to stop and the refrigerator to start working. Does this sound like the starter or capacitor or maybe both? I hate to parts swap at ~ $50+ each part. How can I differentiate the switch vs. capacitor being the issue that is causing the clicking and non-running issue? I am ready to purchase parts from you but want to get the correct part(s).

Eki, The start devvice is the likely choice as the capacitor would not stop t6he compressor from runnimng .

William, If the compressor is running for the freezer temperature to be good then the capacitor or the start device is not likely the issue. This sounds like you have an airflow issue, such as a defrosting issue or something is iced up not allowing the air to reach the refrigerator section.

Mike, Make sure that the control is not in a locked state and if it is not then the dispenser control will be the most likely cause for this issue.

William, based on this information, it is possible that the main control has been affected, causing it to intermittently "glitch". As this is an intermittent failure, the best way to find what may be causing the issue would be to identify what starts to operate immediately before the failure occurs. This will allow that part to be tested to see if the control is the cause, or if it is the part operating just previous to the erratic behavior.

Brandy, Thanks for the question!!! Yes, it could be the relay or it could be the compressor.

Kyle, Unfortunately, if the compressor is still not running and the start device is receiving 120 Vac to it then this will be a faulty compressor that will require service to install.

Art, Test to see if there is 120 vac getting to the start device, if there is then the start device would be the most likely cause for this issue. If the start device does not get power then the control board would likely causes the issue.

Bob, there is a fan W10846539 located just behind the ice maker that draws cold air from the freezer to keep the ice within the necessary temperatures. This fan will need to be tested for 11-14VDC by accessing the wire above the top panel where the LED lights are. If the fan is receiving the voltage necessary but does not operate, then the fan has failed and would need to be replaced.
