How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6016830 / WPW10197428 Compressor Start Device

After researching the problem and watching a video on how to fix the clicking noise which was coming from a part called Relay overload I ordered the part from Appliance Parts Pro which arrived in two days. It took me about 30 minutes to switch out the part and "YES" the clicking noise has disappeared and the freezer is cooling again. Easy to follow instructions saved me the cost of having to call a high priced technician. Thank you Appliance Parts Pro 

Called and described the issue to associate. He said 99% of the time it's the Starter Relay on the compressor. Place my order, got the part, put it in and within 6 hours the fridge was 39 degrees! We couldn't be happier! 

I had maytag refrigerator french door style,Model # MFI2669VEM1.my fridge stop cooling i can hear the fan running constantly when i hear the clicking sound it only lasted for a few seconds i decided to replace the start relay and capacitor and my problem was solve.I hope this help.thanks a bunch to appliancepart.com for all the tips on how to do it yourself. 

We first replaced the main control board because the display seemed to show that there was a problem with it. It started up all the electronics on the fridge, but not the compressor or fan. We then ordered and installed a new compressor start device and capacitor since we read that a power outage can affect those too. The parts arrived the next day, but still no compressor or fan. I called Appliance Parts Pros and a very helpful technician sent me details on service tests we could perform on the fridge. The control board worked well enough for those and showed that both the compressor and fan were still working, so we deduced there might still be a problem with the new motherboard (not from Appliance Parts Pros because not in stock), and asked that company to send us another. We received and installed the new control board and everything came back as good as new! The repair itself was very easy, but diagnosing the problem when the first part was not fully functional made it a challenge and took a lot of time. Thanks for those service tests -- it made a world of difference to know what was and wasn't working! 

Replaced the relay and capacitor that I ordered from Appliance Parts Pros. Parts were exact OEM replacements and this fixed the problems. For less than the price of a service run I was able to repair this in less than 15 minutes. Nice 

Replaced compressor start relay. 

I opened up the back panel of the fridge there was a troubleshooting sheet taped underneath I was able to troubleshoot and find out that my Starter and capacitor or were bad. 

I don’t think I needed the capacitor and relay, but while I was at it I figured I would. Originally we found we had an issue when water cane out of the ice maker. The freezer was hovering around freezing and the refrigerator was about 33 deg. I unplugged the refrigerator and it came back on and ran about a day. The next night, same thing. This time cycling power did not seem to help. Removing the rear cover where the control board was and moving it around allowed it to turn on next time I plugged it in. That didn’t last long. Once these parts came in I swapped and all seems well after several days now. I assume a relay was bad on the control board. At first I thought it was defrost related, but I found the compressor tried to start and the condenser fan came on but quickly went out too. It was as if the run command was interrupted. I do have a noisy damper that seemed to start a few days before this issue. It may be unrelated, but I am goi g to swap that as well. You can’t find refrigerators in stock and $100 is worth it to save $100’s more in food. 

I didn’t want to purchase another refrigerator that would cost me a minimum of $1200 so I looked for parts that may fix it. Looking through YouTube videos, the first one I found talked about the starter relay. In the Kenmore Elite, it’s called a compressor start device. I looked through several videos talking about other issues that may cause cooling to fail. One talked about the Thermistor. I opened the rear of the refrigerator and found that the compressor was warm and the condenser fan was spinning. I heard the relay switch trying to start the compressor every few seconds to a minute. I didn’t know if the compressor was the issue, but if it was, the cost of a compressor would cover a third of the cost for a new refrigerator so a new refrigerator would have been purchased if it was the compressor. The fins inside the freezer were not frozen and I can feel the fan, but one of the videos stated that the thermistor can also cause the refrigerator to not cool. I purchased the Compressor Start Device and one thermistor for the freezer since the cost was minimal. Put them both in and within minutes the refrigerator started to cool down. I’m sure the compressor start device was the one that fixes it, but replacing the thermistor wasn’t difficult so that was replaced and the two parts are far cheaper than replacing the whole refrigerator.
