This genuine OEM replacement jam nut attaches to the idler bracket on a tiller. Jam nuts are a special type of nut designed to not unthread or strip out over time. Jam nuts are usually fastened on with another standard nut and then the two nuts are tightened against each other. Jam nuts can be easily identified from a standard nut because they are roughly half the size. Jam nuts can be lost while making repairs because of their small size. If lost, it might not affect the idler bracket immediately, but over time the standard nut may begin to slip or unthread. Therefore, the jam nut should be replaced as soon as possible. When making this replacement, be sure to unthread the standard nut as well and then tighten them both together using a wrench. This is a flanged lock nut. It’s designed to apply tension, typically on a joint that needs to have a certain amount of flex. As such, it’s mostly used on snowblower chutes and lawnmower handles. They can remain in place, but with a forgiving connection that can take a beating. The nut size is 3/8, with a thread size of 16. A lock nut will generally last for many years. However, the silicone ring inside will wear down if it’s frequently tightened and loosened. It needs to be replaced when it will no longer reliably remain in place. Generally, this begins as a symptom of slight slippage and worsens as time goes on.
