used a drill with grindstone and ground off the rivet head, swapped the new part in... BUT... the kit didnt contain the rivet clip so I had to hit the hardware store for a pushnut that fit, hopefully it will stay on.

After scouring the resource on the internet, the lid switch checked out OK, so it boiled down to the wig wag solenoid unit that engages the transmission. The back panel was opened and a check with a multimeter showed one of the solenoids was an open circuit and provided no resistance reading.
