Removed the handle with two screws on the inside front and pulled out the custom wood panel. Pulled the compactor out from under cabinet. Tipped it over on back of unit, supporting it with a little foot stool. I had to cut down the length of the bar using a Dremel so that it would fit into the channels, it was originally too wide to fit into the fridge. One thing to note, only cut it as wide as the actual fridge; you can get it into the plastic shelf structure by sliding it too much into one side, and then guiding it into the other side.

I replaced the Thermostat and Defrost Timer. It was a fairly easy repair other than removing the old Defrost Timer. The way the manufacturer, in this case, Amana, mounts that unit with "clips" is just poor design and engineering. It is virtually impossible to get the timer out without damaging the mounts. I had to do some creative rework to mount the new timer.
After 2 days, the fridge appears to be working properly with these new parts.
