For Ge Refrigerator Control Board Encoder Assembly (Part Number: OEM9421122)

Rob

I have a GE side by side model GSS20IEPCWW The evap fan would not run I replaced it and it runs fine My problem now is the compressor and evap fan will not cut off unless the encoder board is turned to the off position or it goes into defrost .I have changed the Thermisters and main board no change . Does this sound like a bad encoder board ? Also if I unplug the encoder board the compressor and evap motor will still run is this normal ? Coils seems to be all frosted Freezer goes down to zero and FF in the mid 30s but will not cut off .

Rob, The encoder board will be just for setting the temps and will not have an effect on the unit shutting off. Based on the symptoms of your refrigerator, the unit would have to be shutting off due to the temps being correct. If the unit was running all the time then the temperatures would be either so lo that everything in the unit would be freezing or they would be too high which would be caused by either a defrost or sealed system issue, in which case neither of these things apply.

Rob, the temperature in the refrigerator and the freezer would need to be checked using a thermometer. If the temperature does not reach the set temp, the freezer evaporator would need to be checked to identify if there is a light frost coating on the entire evaporator or if there is only a partial covering. If there is only a partial covering, there is a sealed system failure that would require a freon-certified technician to properly diagnose and repair it.

Ali for Model Number eventalchemy@gmail.com

Hello, What does this GE finest achievement do? The so called board encoder (Part Number: AP3140371) ? I am afraid that this pile of garbage must be nothing but simply the defrost timer or timer or whatever they want to call it. I just want to buy the defrost timer for GE fridge model # GSS22UFPDWW Of course no such thing as the word timer comes up anywhere for this curse of corporation on the masses. They have successfuly removed the word along with perhaps they don't make it anymore either. I don't know. Need help. Thank you so much.

1 Answer

Ali, The encoder board is essentially your temperature control board and has nothing to do with the defrost. This unit does not have a defrost timer because it incorporates an automatic defrost control which is part of the main control board WR55X10942C.

Oscar, as a Three in One relay was installed and the power supply is coming from the control, this would indicate a failure with either the compressor drawing too many amps or the original overload/start failing.

Dan, unfortunately, there is not a testing procedure for the temperature control assembly WR55X10399. However, based on the information provided, since the compressor will stop operating when the temp control is adjusted, it sounds like the issue would be with the temp control. If there was an issue with the main control registering the temperature readings of the thermistors, then adjusting the temp control would not influence the compressor. The most likely situation is that the temp control is not sending the proper data signal and is causing the main control to attempt to achieve colder temperatures than necessary.

Jack K for Model Number GSL25JFPABS

Refrigerator side is to warm @ 50. Freezer side is fine . damper door is always closed . I have replaced the main control board and all 3 thermistors , as unit was not running at all when I first came upon it . Also tested the defrost heater for continuity ,it tested good Both evaporator AND condenser fan motors are good. . Damper door still will not open , I can open it manually , but it will close shortly after . how do I test damper door and or the control for the damper door ?

1 Answer

Jack, This issue will most likely be caused by the damper if there is no issue with the defrost assembly. The part number for the damper would be WR09X10050.

Diego, If the evaporator coils are impacted with ice then either the thermistor or the main control board will be the issue with the unit. If there is very little frost pattern on the coils then this will be a sealed system issue and will need service.

Darrell for Model Number HSS25IFMBWW

I have a Hotpoint model HSS25IFMBWW side by side. The freezer works fine (-0) but the refrigerator side stays at about 38-40F whether I set the control knob to 5 (mid setting) or 9 (coldest). The coils are cleaned, damper door is working, and everything else I've read online points at the cold control for this problem, but the encoder (part WR55X10150 (AP3140371) seems to be the only approximation of a cold control on this unit. I've also read that this temp issue (staying around 38-40F in the frige section) seems to be a problem in general for GE refrigerators. Is this a problem with the encoder? Or just normal operations for this brand? Thanks

1 Answer

Darrell, You will want to check the resistance of the thermistor in the unit to make sure that there is proper resistance. At 36 degrees the resistance should be 14.4K ohms of resistance. If this checks ok then the encoder would most likely be the issue.

Hello Steve. If your compressor has power to it but does not run and cool, you will need to replace the compressor on the unit.
