The Door Switch is an OEM part for GE dryers, designed to ensure the dryer does not operate when the door is open. This safety feature is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring the appliance operates efficiently and safely. The switch signals the dryer's control system about the status of the door—if it's open or closed—thereby allowing or preventing the start of a drying cycle.

Causes of damage to the door switch often include mechanical wear from repeated use, accidental damage from loading or unloading, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Door Switch include:

  • The dryer not starting when the door is closed
  • The dryer continuing to run when the door is opened
  • Unusual noises or the dryer stopping mid-cycle

This OEM GE part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Pat, This model would have two screws at the back of the machine top to remove then slide the top back about an inch and lift up.

Zarm55, the door switch WE4M415 will have a tab on each side that would need to be pressed in. Once pressed in, the switch should push out to the front.

William for Model Number GTDP180ED0WW

When I depress the push to start button the unit starts but stops running when I release the push to start button. After reading your articles on the subject. I replaced the push to start switch with a new one but the same problem still occurs. I was next going to replace the door switch but after reading one of your articles, the unit would not start at all if the door switch was bad. The article indicated that the problem would be in the motor. Am I understanding this correctly?

1 Answer

William, you will want to test the idler spring switch WD21X10261 which can be found at the motor. As the door switch is the last switch in line that would stop connection to neutral, you are correct in that your model would not start at all if the door switch was not functioning. If the idler spring switch tests good for continuity when in the closed state, then you more than likely have an issue in the motor WE17X22217 not switching over properly.

Ron, There should be a marking on the switch for the common terminal and the white wire connects to that one.

Michele for Model Number GTDX200EM1WW

My dryer rotary start switch "bracket" on the inside of the backsplash broke and I bought a new backsplash & replaced. The dryer does not turn on now. My son checked the continuity of the start switch & it seems to be fine. My timer control, when set on minutes, moved to the off position. Does the light on in the drum mean the door switch is working or does that have to be tested for continuity also? Taking the whole dryer apart looks like a hassle to check the safety thermostat first.

1 Answer

Michelle, If the light is on and goes off when pushing the switch then this would most likely be the safety thermostat but will need to check it.

Rory, Based on the information it sounds likely that the door switch is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Greg, The door switch will not allow the unit to run if it was defective. This issue would be caused by a faulty motor centrifugal switch that is faulty and would require a new motor. The motor part number is WE17X22217.

Becky, The door switch will be the most likely cause for the light to not work and for the unit to not start.

Mike Lynch for Model Number DPSR610EG7WT

I have an Electric GE clothes dryer (model DPSR610EG7WT) that won't start when the START button is pressed. I thought the start switch was bad. The switch is mechanical; pushing the start button forces a flexible metal (copper based?) piece against the contacts, completing the circuit. The mechanical part functions properly and touches the contacts. When the button is pressed a humming noise can be heard. Does the humming noise mean the switch is good or bad? If the humming noise doesn't indicate the switch is good or bad, how do I test the switch? Mike

1 Answer

Mike, If the contacts are making in the switch then it is good. You will want to test the door switch for continuity and the thermal fuse. If no continuity then the part is bad and would need to be replaced. If these check ok then the motor would be the issue.

Hello Bill, If there are no loose connections and the door switch is good, you will most likely have a control issue.
