The Light Switch is an OEM replacement part for GE refrigerators. It controls the interior light, turning it on when the refrigerator door is opened and off when the door is closed. This ensures proper illumination for visibility when accessing the refrigerator's contents.

A malfunctioning light switch can result from wear and tear, electrical issues, or damage caused by repeated use. Over time, the internal mechanism may fail, or the housing can crack, leading to improper operation.

Symptoms of a bad light switch include:

  • Interior light not turning on when the door is opened
  • Light staying on even when the door is closed
  • Flickering or inconsistent light operation
  • Difficulty pressing or releasing the switch

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Light Switch (Part Number: OEM21056175)

Hello Billy, This is most often caused by a bad light socket WR2X9391. Remove the light bulb and look inside the socket. A bad socket will normally show signs of excessive heat by showing discoloration. The wiring is not accessible to the light switch since it is inside the blown in insulation. You can remove the switch and test from each wire to ground.

I need to replace the light switch in the fresh food compartment... the switch that turns the light on when the door is opened. I searched your site for the part number for my model. Part # wr23x10143 comes up. However, this part shows that it plugs in while the directions say it is attached to wires. Please advise the following: 1. Is this the correct part number for this model built in 1996? 2. Does the switch plug in or is it wired? 3. Do I remove the switch by prying it out with screw driver and putty knife (your instructions say this is correct) or do I have to access it from the top? 4. If pried out, which side is the retainer clip on? Thank you.

Hello Doug, yes the correct light switch for this model number is WR23X37285. The switch will plug in and you will remove it by using a putty knife to press the tab in on the side and work it out. If you look at the third picture, you will notice the tab on that side and the switch unpressed pointing up. Look at your switch if the switch swings back, it would be on the right side, Thanks!

Hello Steve. After looking at the old switch and checking with the manufacture, the old switch is removed the same way according to the manufacture. You'll need a putty knife or similar tool, a small flat blade"pocket screw driver, and some sort of tape. First turn power off to the fridge. Place a piece of tape on the trim panel on both sides of the switch( this is to keep from damaging the S/S trim panel. Using the screwdriver, pry down on the right side of the switch, and use the putty knife to press in on the retiner tab until the right side of the switch is half way down (3/8 to 1/2 inch), Use the putty knife and slip it between the left side of the switch and trim and pry down on the switch carefully. At this point you should be able to "wiggle the switch out of the opening. you need to be careful and not accidentally knock the wires off the switch terminals. Detach the wires one at a time and attach then to the new switch terminals, reverse the procedure and re establish power to the refrigerator.

Regarding door switch # WR23X10143: I cannot get the switch to turn 90 degrees to allow the wiring connections to clear the opening and get the switch out. I am supposed to push on a tab on the right side to release the switch, but I see no tab. The switch is starting to deform and I still cannot release it. I even watched a "You Tube" where the tab is pushed and the switch turns right out - but I cannot seem to do this. Could there be something different about this switch? It is possible that the mounting hole in my unit is cut slightly smaller than specified? I would like to inspect this situation for correct diagnosis before I order new switches. Many thanks! Steve, You'll need to go at this from the above the doors(bottom of the compressor compartment). You' need to open or remove the upper grille panel "Remove the grille panel by removing 2 screws from each side. Remove the wire guard and rocker switch panel. " Once you have the wire guard removed from the lower front portion of the compressor compartment, you'll have access to the door switches and wiring harness. Just make sure you remove power to the refrigerator before you start.

Hello Joe, While they are both probably rated for 120Vac, it's hard to say whether it's rated for the same current draw and the dimensions could also be different enough that it might not mount properly. As a technician, and not an engineer, I would recommend to contact the two manufacturers indidviually and get the information on each switch so you can compare exact information. We do not have the information on the parts to do a proper evaluation.
