The Charcoal Filter is an OEM replacement part for LG microwaves. The charcoal filter works to remove undesirable cooking odors, steam, and grease vapors from the air circulated inside the microwave. It traps airborne particles and deodorizes airflow using an advanced charcoal formulation.

Causes of a bad charcoal filter can include normal saturation over 6-12 months of regular use. Prolonged high-heat cooking and grilling can also cause premature clogging.

Symptoms of a bad filter include:

  • strong lingering cooking smells that linger in the microwave interior and escape into the kitchen.
  • Food may take on secondary odors from previous heating sessions.

This OEM LG part is also compatible with some Kenmore model microwaves.

For Lg Charcoal Filter (Part Number: OEM20507811)

Edmund A. for Model Number LG Microwave LMV1630ST

Hi. I purchased 2 x charcoal filters 5230W1A011C for the microwave, but they do not fit. Your website indicated this is the filter I need for the unit, and the compatibility checker confirmed that. I think the grease filter looks more like the original, but I want a carbon filter, as the vent recirculates into the room and not into a duct. How do I return the filters and how do I get a replacement carbon filter which will fit? Thank you.

Hello Fang! Unfortunately, model LMV1642DS is a Canadian LG model and we do not have parts information available on this product. Sorry about that!

I am wondering if the charcoal filter is only used when the microwave is setup to vent into the room versus through the duct work. I currently have this microwave in a rental, there is ductwork present above the microwave but I know when they build tract houses a lot of the time they are not correctly installed. This filter is filthy and I will replace if I need to, but if it is only used when venting in the room, I will skip it and have my electrician hook it up correctly to the duct work present. Thank you in advance

Sharon, Yes the charcoal filter is used for when the unit is being recirculated back into the room and is not needed when correct outside venting is available.
