Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Agitator Bolt (Part Number: OEM18026187)

1 Answer

Hello D.M., If this is producing no positive results, you may need to use an impact driver to break it loose. If the unit is operating properly, the bolt may be stripped and you may have to apply upward pressure against the bolt while unscrewing for removal.

I have been noticing rust stains on my white clothes after washing, but otherwise the washer appears to be working properly. I removed the agitator bolt and agitator inside the wash tub and see that there is a lot of rust built up around the 'cog' that connects to the agitator. I can't tell what part is rusting. It's not the bolt. Can I remove the agitator plate from inside the tub without laying the entire machine down on its side?

1 Answer

Pattycakes, You can remove the agitator from the unit without laying on its side bur it would just be a matter of getting ahold of it. It is possible that the spanner nut is what is rusting or the shaft of the gearcase that is rusting.

Hello Adriana. The plate does lift out of the unit. However, some can be difficult to remove. If the bolt is removed, it should lift out. You may be able to use a small screwdriver and be careful not to damage it to get under the plate and lift it out.

I took the agitator out to clean it. Nothing was broken and I did not clean the grease from the agitator bolt. I put everything back together, tightened the bolt to "snug" (not a 1/4 turn past finger tight - like spark plugs) every thing seems to work properly spins correctly, sounds good, no odd pitches or vibrations. But when I look at it from the top down as it is spinning - the agitator now looks like it is spinning at a ever so slight angle. The gasket on the bolt did come off and I washed it. I put the flat side of the gasket next to the bolt and the slightly curved side down. Should the gasket be in the opposite position? Do I need to tighten up the bolt more or is there some way to doublecheck? Thank you

1 Answer

Richard, You want to get the agitator bolt as tight as possible, (you need to add that 1/4 turn) the position of the bolt gasket, sounds fine, it doesn't really matter, most people "flip" them over, when they can. The "spinning at a ever so slight angle" isn't a big concern. The agitator shaft is "free wheeling" in the spin cycle, and the tubs shift slightly to the front corner do to the torque and creates an optical illusion. Based on your post everything sounds great.

Hello Jesica. Check the agitator in the unit and see if it is broken. If it is good, then you may have an issue with the drive block. Check and see if it is stripped out in the unit.

Hello Ted, If you can pull the agitator out the end of the bolt should be protruding a bit. You can use a hacksaw to put a slot into the top of the bolt shaft so you can try a flat blade screwdriver or you can drill a hold down the center of the bolt and use an easy out to retract the remaining part of the screw. If the agitator will not come out, you may have to break it out to complete the repair.
