For Whirlpool Washer Shift Actuator (Part Number: OEM18044142)

Kurt for Model Number MVWX500XW0

Can a shift actuator fail by being too weak? My washer won't agitate or go into spin mode. The shift actuator is trying to move, but can not fully actuate. If I spin the drum pulley from underneath, it helps the actuator shift to the correct location, then everything is fine. So my questions are: 1. Can the shift actuator fail by being too weak 2. If not, what could be causing the difficulty in shifting if the drum spins easily? Thank you for your time.

1 Answer

Kurt, With the shift actuator not rotating to position then this would be a faulty shift actuator which would need to be replaced.

Hello Brandy. This is a common failure and there is nothing that you can do to prevent it. Sometimes if you have power surges during the cycle, it can damage the part.

Ian, You will want to check the shift actuator on the unit as this will be the most likely cause for the noise on the unit during agitation.

Nicole for Model Number 110.20022012

My washer is taking a very long time to run through a full cycle, sometimes over 2 hours. It is also making a very loud mechanical grinding noise when switching from fill to wash, wash to rinse or rinse to spin, although this does not happen with every load. Sometimes the clothes are still wet after spin is finished and piled onto one side of the machine (even after very careful even loading.) Other times the machine works fine. I ran the diagnostic and got f7e5 and f7e6 fault codes. The manual agitation tests completed with no problems. I'm thinking the shifter assembly needs to be replaced but how do I confirm that? Can the shifter cause the motor fault code? Or is it the motor causing the shifter fault code? How do I know which to replace? Thanks ??

Cody for Model Number Whirlpool Model # WTW4900BW0

Hello, my whirlpool washing machine model number WTW4900BW0 will not go into spin/agitate mode. I put clothes in the washing machine, turn it on and it goes into sensing mode. Then the lock light will start to flash and click. Then it will lock and start but won't ever made it to the spin/drain mode. When I open up the washing machine sometimes there is water and sometimes there is not but clothes are always soaked. Before I would put it into drain/spin mode and sometimes it would work sometimes it would not. Now it won't drain or spin. At first from my google searches it seemed as if it was the lid lock. I replaced the lid lock hoping it would solve the problem and it did not. Should I replace the shift actuator? It sounds like as if that is the problem from what I've read on the posts.

1 Answer

Cody, Yes the shift actuator would be the next most likely cause for the issue with the unit going to agitate or spin but also check the splutch assembly to make sure that it is not damaged.
