The Shift Actuator is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is an electronic component located inside the transmission that controls the shifting between wash cycles. The shift actuator receives signals from the washer control board to change modes, initiating proper movements to advance the cycle.

Symptoms of a bad shift actuator include:

  • The washer fails to advance through cycles properly
  • Gets stuck in one phase of the wash cycle
  • Makes abnormal noises during operation
  • Does not agitate or spin as expected

Over time, environmental factors and normal wear and tear can cause the shift actuator to malfunction.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

NOTE: This new version of the part features a redesigned black plastic housing with an adapter wire harness. It replaces the older version that came in red plastic. The new part is guaranteed to fit and function like the original.

Prem, If you lift the top by removing two screws in the hinges in the back and slide top forward then lift you will find the tech sheet for your unit in the front left upper corner of the inside in a plastic bag. This tech sheet will show you how to enter diagnostics and view error codes.

Chris, Couple things to check and do. Run the calibration mode. There's a service sheet inside the cabinet under the lid top left close to the front of the unit. Check capacitor for damage or wires. Check wires to the motor for any breaks or damage. Capacitor for the motor is close to the actuator you installed. Most times you can visually see when these fail because they swell and the insides start coming out.

Juan, You will want to check the wiring between the main board and the shift actuator and if this checks ok then the issue would most likely be caused by a faulty main control board.

More of an observation than a question. Why are there so many bad actuators on these Whirlpool washers? Also I repairmen offered to trade out my six-year-old Whirlpool sensing machine for an Amana that is $300 because he said the actuator and labor to change it was $180. But when I look at the videos it doesn't seem like it's much of a job to change the actuator. Kind of sounds like a scam to take and re- sell my better washer. What do you think? I really dislike that these new washers have control over all of the movements instead of me being in control, and would rather have the old style but they really do a great job of cleaning! Thanks.-- Bennie

Bennie, Replacing the shift actuator does not take much effort. You simply lean the unit back and remove 2 screws over the cover and then 2 screws holding in the actuator. Remove the actuator and unplug it and install the new one in reverse.

Hello Heather, This can be an issue with the splutch W10721967, the gearcase W11454741, or the control W10484681. It would be a good idea to pull the tech sheet from the plastic bag on the inside of the front panel and run the self-diagnostic cycle to help pinpoint the issue.

Suzi, If when the unit is restarting after it finishes then this would most likely be a control issue. You will want to check wiring of the unit and if the wiring checks ok then replace the main board. If the unit is still not agitating then check the splutch assembly as it would be the most likely cause for this issue.
