For Whirlpool Washer Shift Actuator (Part Number: OEM18044142)

Angelak

We have a Whirlpool Cabrio washer. It would not spin a load of laundry, thinking daughters overloaded the washer. I replaced the shift actuator last night. When I undid the cover to the belt I noticed there was no nut on the bolt for the larger wheel for the belt and that the wheel was out of place in general. I moved it back to a flat position and added a nut. When I got everything set back up and hooked up, I did a diagnostic test and everything went fine. So I added a very small load of laundry and right away when it started on a Quick Wash, the drum started banging around hard all over inside. The drum is spongy on all sides as I tested that and like it was before. HELP! Any idea what this is?!?! Thank you!

Hello Angela, without a model number we can only suggest a few general checks, Try running an empty load in a spin cycle and see if it still shakes. The inner tub (clothes basket) on that model line has a water-filled balance ring for unbalanced loads, with the washer off open the lid and check to see if you can move the basket front/back, side to side in side the outer tub, it does move then it has come loose off of its mounting hub, if its secure it may be just the tub suspension rods are weak.

The washer will wash and drain, but will not spin. The lid lock flashes, and pushing the cancel or pause button does nothing. The only way to get it to spin and finish the load is to unplug the washer, plug it back in and turn the selector to spin. The washer will spin and finish on it's own. Also, when the washer is off, I noticed there are several of the lights around the selector are on really dim, almost not noticeable unless the room light is off.

Hello Dave, You should enter the diagnostics as per the tech sheet and see what fault codes are present. This will direct you to the circuit causing the issue. The tech sheet is in a plastic pouch adhered to the inside of the front panel. Before entering the diagnostics you should turn the dial 2 to 3 turns counterclockwise to reset the control so it can accept a new command. From this point, follow the tech sheet to the fault codes and write them down as you go. This will prevent the possibility of losing the fault codes and having to run the machine long enough for the machine control to pop the codes again.

Hello Frederick, the shift actuator is not considered repairable, just replaceable, if it is regularly failing you may want to also replace the Splutch Cam Kit part W10721967 .

George, The model number listed is not coming up as being a valid model and would want to access the tech sheet from inside the unit and see if there are any stored error codes. The error codes will give you direction on what to check.

Joshua, It does sound likely that there is a issue with the shift actuator and would recommend putting the unit into diagnostics using the tech sheet and see if there is any error codes stored. If there is a error code then follow instructions on tech sheet for testing as this will guide you to the issue. Make sure that if you replace any parts that you put the unit through calibration mode.

My tenant called and said the washer pan was full of water, the drum was rotating violently (banging against the side of the housing and the tub hadn't drained, with lots of water still in it. I took off the rear panel and when I disconnected the short tube connecting the pump to the back of the washer about 16 oz. of water flowed out - my guess was that the drain pump failed and that was the residual water left in the drain hose, which then must have drained down to that tube. I removed the pump (no indication of leaking from the seal of the pump to the tub) and tested it (110v attached to the two prongs of the pump) and it spins! Hmm, so with water having backed up to the point of filling the pan I'm trying to figure out what it is - could it be the switch that flips from agitate to drain failed, leaving the washer full of water yet spinning on high thinking it was draining? If so, that is the part I'll buy!! I guess the only other possibility could be a sock got pulled into the drain area below the tub? If that's possible I'll find your video on how to pull up that bottom ribbed cover and stop over again to see if that's it.

Scott, If the unit has water in the base pan of the unit then check to make sure that the pressure hose is not clogged causing the unit to overfill some. There will also always be some water left in the bottom of the tub and would probably be about the amount that came out. Also check to see if the leaking is coming from the water valve or from the bottom of the tub. The banging around could be cause by bad suspension rods.

Jon, For this issue with being unable to put the unit through the calibration then the most likely issue will be a faulty control board for the unit.

Washer cycle is taking >1 hour. Gets through rinse but take long time to move into spin. I replaced the actuator twice, splutch one, and belt once. Calibrate and tests fine. Initial 2-10 loads it is fine then goes back to >1 hour cycle time. Appears the gears on the splutch are not aligned so the actuator can not move full stroke to engage them. If I remove the actuator - I'm unable move the cam lever to engage the splutch. If I rotate the pulley slightly, I can manually and freely engage splutch. Reassemble and works fine are a few cycles and them back to issue.

Jeff, Check to see if there are any stored error codes and check to make sure that there is nothing that is caught between the tubs of the unit which would cause this issue.
