The Air Diffuser is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It regulates the flow of cold air from the freezer compartment to the refrigerator compartment, ensuring proper temperature control and even cooling throughout the fridge.

Over time, the diffuser can fail due to mechanical issues, obstruction by ice or debris, or wear on the moving parts. This can result in uneven cooling, leading to spoiled food and inefficient operation.

Symptoms of a bad air diffuser include:

  • Inconsistent temperatures in the refrigerator
  • Frost buildup in the freezer
  • Warm spots in the refrigerator compartment
  • The refrigerator running constantly or not cooling adequately

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Air Diffuser (Part Number: OEM18019983)

1 Answer

Hello Eugene, With the freezer door closed, you should feel cold air blowing in from the top left of the fresh food compartment. This signifies that the air diffuser WP2216112 is open. The diffuser door can be checked by unplugging the refrigerator and putting your head in the fresh food compartment. Have someone plug the refrigerator back in. You should hear the diffuser motor energize at this point. If not, replace the air diffuser. If you hear it activate but it makes a "clicking" sound, replace it because this signifies that the damper door is broken. A frost accumulation can cause this. IF frost is found in the damper, check the door seals for any possible air leaks. This includes the ice door.

Hello Mike, The diffuser WP2216112 should be checked for frost and a possibly broken damper door. It should not click but will make sound when activated. The clicking noise makes it sound like it will need to be replaced.

Fred for Model Number KSRS25ILB

KitchenAid side by side, purchased 7/15/02. Fridge side running very cold, diffuser is just pouring in cold air from freezer, causing some Fridge side to freeze . Set Fridge side temperature control to max (41 deg), no change (diffuser air still full speed coming in from freezer side). I have had problems twice before with the diffuser, only the diffuser was iced up and no cooling to the Fridge side. I took the diffuser apart and found a broken plastic part. I glued a flat tooth pick to fix the part and put it back together (a pain). Lasted for 2-4 years each. Health has warn me down, so I would like to buy a new part this time – is it the same problem (diffuser)? So, are there any other known issues that can be causing the problem (for instance, could a temperature sensor be reading high and causing the diffuser to pour freezer cold air to the Fridge side)? Other ideas on what could be the problem? Thank you.

Fred, The most common issue for your type of complaint, is a broken link on the diffuser damper door, or failed motor, and the door won't cycle open or close WP2216112 / WP2216112 Air Diffuser. Other checks to make are at the doors, make sure the doors close and seal properly, make sure the ice dispenser flapper closes and seals properly and articles on the shelves aren't hanging over the sides or against the walls blocking or redirecting the airflow. Thanks,

John, there are a few things that could occur to cause this. If there has been a temperature issue or a hot item was placed in the unit, then the moisture could accumulate in the damper and potentially freeze up. You may want to check to ensure that there are no obstructions like this in the damper. Another thing that can cause an issue is if there was a power flicker. If power cuts off and on multiple times, this can impact any component especially if it is in operation during the power fluctuation. Inspection of the damper would be recommended to see if it is a mechanical failure or if there is a possible obstruction.

If you are sure the diffuser is really open then check the rear wall of freezer for ice built up on evaporator coils. If ice is present then you have a defrost issue,if not a possible fan motor issue in freezer.

Scott, check your air flow by opening the refrigerator door, put your hand by the air vent, open the freezer door, if air flow increases, your air return is partially blocked and would need to be defrosted.

Man with a headache, For this issue it would be recommended to check the thermistors on the unit and they should have a resistance reading of 2.7K ohms at room temp of 77 degrees. If this checks ok then the issue will likely be the control board.

Hello Joel. You do not have to cut anything. You must press hard on the damper to lock in the tabs. They have added a thicker piece of foam to help with sealing it off and ice buildup. It will snap into place but is very hard to press.

Chris for Model Number 106.53652300

i have kenmore model # 106.53652300 side by side the freezer work good but the referigerator is not cooling and the defrost it got snow ,then after clean the snow it start to work fine for three or four days and build up snow again ,I do not know what the problem ,and which parts I need , Heater defrost or Bi-metal defrost or air diffuser, the divider got hot when I started after cleaning the snow ,could you please tell me what the problem ? and which parts need to replace .Thank you

1 Answer

Chris, You will want to do a continuity test on the heater and the defrost thermostat to make sure that both have continuity. If there is continuity then the part is good. If the heater and the thermostat check ok then the issue will be the control board 8201527.
