The Dishwasher Food Chopper is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It's designed to break down food particles that are washed off dishes during the cleaning cycle. This prevents large debris from clogging the dishwasher's drain and ensures that water remains clean throughout the cycle, enhancing the machine's cleaning efficiency.

A malfunctioning or worn-out food chopper can lead to several problems, such as poor cleaning results due to food particles being redeposited on dishes, or even clogs that can strain the dishwasher's pump and filters.

Symptoms of a bad Dishwasher Food Chopper include:

  • Dishes coming out with food particles still on them
  • The dishwasher making unusual noises indicating a struggle or blockage
  • Water not draining properly, suggesting a possible clog

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dishwasher Food Chopper (Part Number: OEM17951346)

JP, There would be water that is supposed to be in the chopper area which helps keep seals from drying out. It sounds as though the only thing that would be needed is the chopper assembly.

Hello John, You will only be able to run a couple of cycles before the screen stops up if the chopper W10083957V were removed. So, you cannot run the unit without the chopper. If the screen were removed the drain would stop up from the large food particles.

Hello Andrew. Unless the unit is clogged, the chopper should not cause the unit not to drain. You need to check for a clogged drain hose or bad drain pump on the unit.

Hello Peter, If the model number is actually MDB8949SBM3, you need to see if the voltage is being sent to the drain motor when it should be draining. If not, the issue could be the wiring connection in the "power connection box" on the upper right-hand side behind the kick panel, or the control board. If it is getting power, the issue can be the chopper W10083957V, a bad drain pump WPW10348269 or a clog in the drain line.

Hello. My chopper blade (8268383) on my kitchenaid dishwasher recently broke after 10 years of trouble-free service. The replacement blade I got at the appliance store is not making contact with the screen. This was a red flag to me but I assembled it anyway. Sure enough, in less than 2 weeks the screen was jammed with gunk, dishes were dirty, etc. Doesn’t the blade have to be in contact with the screen in order to grind the food and keep the screen clear? That’s how my old one always was and it worked perfectly. Thank you??

Jon, We will need to have the model number of your unit to be able to assist with your question.

Steve, Unfortunately the way that the unit is put together by taking the chopper off it would possibly cause the unit to leak. You will want to leave the chopper in place.

Hayley, We wouldn't expect the impeller to be the issue at this point, but there are several checks to make for the washability complaints. Check and make sure the dishwasher hasn't shifted in the cabinet, make sure it's level both side to side and front to back. Start the dishwasher, let it fill and wash for 3 to 5 minutes, unlatch the door, remove the lower dishwasher rack and check the water level in the bottom of the tub, it should be within 1/4 inch of the bottom of the heater element, and it should be hot (120 dgrs.F.) If the water level is too low or not hot enough, the detergent won't dissolve and breakdown properly and create circulation problems. Also check the water level float in the bottom of the tub to make sure it's not getting "stuck" and/or activating too soon.

Hello Mike. No, they can not be removed from the unit. This will damage the motor. Thanks.

Toola for Model Number KUDS301IVWH4

Hi, we bought this Kitchenaid dishwasher new in 2010 and it has not been great. I've had it cleaned out before but it was continuing to leave tiny bits of grit and food clinging to the outside (and sometimes the inside) of glasses, bowls, and mugs, and I constantly find that one or two jet holes on the lower and upper spinner arms are blocked with some little bit of food--I'm not sure how food would get into those arms. We do rinse our plates although dishwasher people are always saying "don't rinse the plates!" Now I've taken the dishwasher apart myself to clean it all out. What I've discovered is that our dishwasher has no chopper assembly in it at all (part # W10083957V), although I can see the black spindle where the chopper assembly would attach. All I can find out from the people who answered the service lines at Whirlpool is that chopper assemblies are considered optional in these dishwashers and that they don't recommend altering the dishwasher by adding parts that it doesn't have. One person thought that additional wiring or an additional panel button might be needed in order for a chopper to work. My question is: Should I put a chopper assembly in? Do they work better with a chopper assembly or do the chopper assemblies tend to just get clogged up and require even more frequent cleaning out? Is it best to just put the dishwasher back together without adding a chopper, now that I've cleaned out all the food I can find and rinsed out the spinner arms? Thanks so much! Toola

Hello Toola. Your model shows a chopper W10083957V and you need one in there. You also need to make sure your using hot water in the unit and the right amount of detergent and rinse aid.
