The Dishwasher Food Chopper is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It's designed to break down food particles that are washed off dishes during the cleaning cycle. This prevents large debris from clogging the dishwasher's drain and ensures that water remains clean throughout the cycle, enhancing the machine's cleaning efficiency.

A malfunctioning or worn-out food chopper can lead to several problems, such as poor cleaning results due to food particles being redeposited on dishes, or even clogs that can strain the dishwasher's pump and filters.

Symptoms of a bad Dishwasher Food Chopper include:

  • Dishes coming out with food particles still on them
  • The dishwasher making unusual noises indicating a struggle or blockage
  • Water not draining properly, suggesting a possible clog

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello Chris, The chopper assembly is the common cause of this issue. Replace it and the issue will most likely be resolved.

Wayne, The food processor does not have a clutch on it and it sounds like the issue will be with the coupler on the motor. If this coupler is not making good contact with the bowl then it will cause this issue.

Hello Ang. If nothing is in the chopper, you will need to order and replace the motor assembly on the unit.

John for Model Number Kenmore Elite Dishwasher Model 665,13413K701

On my Kenmore dishwasher the chopper blade is not spinning when engaged with the shaft from the impeller assembly on the pump. The issue does not seem to be the chopper blade or it's shaft. Rather it seems the small black shaft from the impeller is not turning when the chopper blade is engaged. My question is should the the chopper blade be spinning whenever the impeller on the pump is, or is there a clutch mechanism within the impeller assembly that engages the chopper blade during a draining cycle? I need to know if I need to replace the impeller assembly to resolve this issue with the chopper blade not spinning, as the chopper blade and screen seems to be fine, but is continuously clogging. I ran a draining cycle with the door opened and the chopping blade exposed and engage and did not see it spinning..

John, The shaft for the chopper blade should go on the impeller and if the shaft is ok then you will want to replace the impeller assembly.

Stan for Model Number MDB6709AWS1

I replaced the food chopper (purchased from you) but the screen continues to accumulate debris and clogs in about a week. I can not determine if the chopper is properly mated to the shaft because if I install the chopper as described in the video (with the wrench) it is nearly impossible to properly align the groove in the inlet protector with the edge of the screen. When the screen is placed in the groove and the chopper aligned with the shaft the top edge will not easily mate with the groove in the inlet protector (screen favors toward the shaft). I have devised a way to place tension on the chopper blade while in the inlet protector and then the entire protector with blade is lowered in place then the tension is taken off the blade. using this approach I can not check chopper shaft alignment. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Stan, You will want to make sure that when you put the dishes in the dishwasher you will want to make sure that you are scraping off large particles from the plate. If you do not do this then it is likely the screen will get clogged up. Also if you do not have the blade in properly it will cause this issue as well.

Stan, Once you have the screen and chopper blade properly seated in the channel, and release the chopper blade the coupler "teeth" are chamfered and will mesh with the "teeth" on the impeller hub once the motor starts. But you have to make sure the screen is properly seated in the channel and the cover lines up and is also seated properly. Usually if the assembly isn't aligned and seated properly, there will be a scraping or grinding noise. You may want to remove the pump assembly and work on the assembly on a work bench or table. Some other things to check would be the hot water temperature, 120 dgrs.F. on the first fill of a wash cycle, needs hot water to break down the grease and oils and certain debris from the dishes, proper amount of detergent for the type load and degree of soil or debris. Scrape or rinse off any hard to remove sauces or condiments, catsup, egg yoke, etc. do not pre wash the dishes. and make sure there is plenty of water in the bottom of the tub, should be approximately 1 inch deep in the center of the tub.

Hello LP. Depending on what your washing in the unit, it could cause them to clog. If it is normal stuff, then you may need to replace the chopper assembly.

Hello J.B., I'm sorry but we will need to ask you to post a new question including the model number from your units' I.D. tag so we can recommend parts that can be guaranteed to work properly on your unit. If the part fit properly, you have most likely installed the new version of what you did have, but we can only be sure by looking up what is recommended for your design. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
