The Dishwasher Food Chopper is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers. It's designed to break down food particles that are washed off dishes during the cleaning cycle. This prevents large debris from clogging the dishwasher's drain and ensures that water remains clean throughout the cycle, enhancing the machine's cleaning efficiency.

A malfunctioning or worn-out food chopper can lead to several problems, such as poor cleaning results due to food particles being redeposited on dishes, or even clogs that can strain the dishwasher's pump and filters.

Symptoms of a bad Dishwasher Food Chopper include:

  • Dishes coming out with food particles still on them
  • The dishwasher making unusual noises indicating a struggle or blockage
  • Water not draining properly, suggesting a possible clog

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

For Whirlpool Dishwasher Food Chopper (Part Number: OEM17951346)

Derek I for Model Number GU3200XTVY0

My chopper blade was shredded, and the screen was getting clogged. I replaced the chopper, but it's not spinning. The first time I used it, it was loud and I could hear it spinning running, now it's quiet but it's getting clogged up every 3rd load. The water level covers the base of the dishwasher about an inch but the temperature is only 95 F. The shaft that the blade attaches to spins freely. What am I missing here, a new circulation pump? or it's not heating? the element wasn't hot to touch after 4 minutes of running but they do heat dry. Not sure what I need at this point. Please help

1 Answer

Derek, This issue would most likely be caused by a circulation motor with the shaft spinning freely.

Laurel, the impeller shaft will need to be checked for free movement. If the shaft does not move freely, there may be an obstruction in the impeller or the motor WPW10757217 has seized up.

Jim, It's not likely you'll need a circulation motor or another chopper blade(as long as you installed it properly). You will want to check for a proper water level and temperature at the bottom of the tub. Start the dishwasher, let it fill and wash for a minute or two then unlatch the door, and remove the lower rack. the water level should cover the top of the filter assembly(approximately 3/4 to 1 in. in-depth and should measure 120 dgrs.F. If there's not enough water, or if the water isn't hot enough, the pump won't circulate properly and the debris will have a tendency to "clog up the works". Thanks,

Paul, A dishwasher model number would be more helpful, but as best we can tell, The WP8531857 inlet protector and WP9741232 screw would be all you need. The additional metal protector and screw have been eliminated from the product and are no longer available. Thanks,

Jeff for Model Number KUDS30CXSS1

When I tried to replace the chopper assembly it looks like the old blade came in contact with the housing so the new one won’t sit properly. The slot where the screen sits is “chewed up” at about 6 to 9 o’clock on the motor housing and 12 to 3 o’clock on the cover. So it appears the old blade was oscillating because it was broken. The slot on the cover isn’t as bad as the motor housing and the slot is mostly intact. Is it possible to glue the edges of the screen to the motor assembly so I can get the cover on which I think will hold it in place. Any other thoughts other than replacing the motor?

1 Answer

Jeff, It is unlikely that glue would hold the screen in place if the housing has broken where the slot is for the screen. This would require a sump housing for the unit.

Chris, If your screen is getting that clogged that quick you need to make sure you put less debris into the unit.[Dont prewash but you need to scrape the plates.] There is a good video on the website about the install.

Top dishes were not getting water so I looked through your videos and found that the chopper assembly broke loose and some the clip on the plastic cover for this assembly broke and does not snap in place (the screw seems to hold it in place fine). I took out the chopper assembly and ran the dishwasher and it works perfectly. Can I run the dishwasher without the assembly? I'm worried that there may be issue with the motor already and with the broken clip, if I buy the chopper, I would still have the same problem. Thanks very much for the videos!

Amber, You will want to make sure that you install the chopper on the unit as this would most likely be an issue with the unit getting clogged by larger debris.
