For Whirlpool Icemaker Assembly (Part Number: OEM9548208)

Brian J. for Model Number 2198597

The sweeper arm that moves to clear the unit of ice had frozen into the ice cubes in my current unit. Upon realizing this, I removed the ice maker and cleaned the ice from the ice mold by defrosting. I re-installed the ice maker and the arm did rotate and fill once more. When the ice was frozen the arm did not rotate ever again to remove the frozen ice. Should I replace the entire ice making unit or do you feel something else is wrong to cause this?

Hello Brian, The ice maker is out of time. The motor module W10190935 replacement will correct this issue as long as the mold heater tests good. This mounts to the front of the ice maker and is half the price of the complete ice maker. To test the ice maker mold heater, unplug the unit and using an ohm meter set to the RX1 scale, test from hole L to hole H. You should read from 51O to 72O. If the reading is higher than this by more than 10%, replace the complete ice maker assembly. If the reading in within the range mentioned, replace the motor module.

All of a sudden there was a stream of water flowing out the dispenser door of the ice maker. Had to yank the unit out to get to the wall shut off. The ice bucket in the door was nearly full and the ice maker unit is filled with ice. There is a black tube from the freezer ceiling that is not connected to anything in the ice maker. It just sits over the end of the I/M. IR signal solid color when door is manually held closed; blinks 2x in cycles when door open or I/M switched off. If ice maker was stuck in a fill mode, I would have expected that the mold would have had just water not solid ice. But I really don't know. Please advise as to what went wrong with this thing. Thank you!

Hello Leif, There are only two things I can think of that will cause this. One is a malformed separator. The separator is the white plastic par that the harvest rake passes through to harvest and the only fix for this is replacing the separator. Being plastic, there is no way to get it right again. The other thing is an insufficient water fill. This will cause hollow cubes and under-sized cubes. These cubes won't drop correctly and will often get caught up in between the harvest rake fingers and the separator. This is caused by low water pressure or a failing water inlet valve.

my ice maker was freezing water in black tube we used blow dryer to thaw out and it would work fine for a short time and did the same thing so we used the dryer again about 5 times. this last time the ice froze all down the inside and the ice maker was frozen up too. i just ordered the ice maker and the bracket we dropped and broke the side slide part off. do you know what is wrong with my ice maker we have done some trouble shooting and nothing works.

Carlie, Based on your post, you most likely have a fill valve issue causing the water in the fill tube to freeze, or causing the icemaker to overfill.

I order the AP3182733 Mf# 2198597 for my refrigerator. My existing old ice maker assembly looks exactly like the one in the picture here. The new I got is all white (different with the one in the picture). The support casing is all white. The mold ice is deeper and the bearing where the water falls in is bigger. I haven't installed the new ice maker yet. I want to make sure I have the right part. Did I ordered the correct part (AP 3182733)?

Hello David. You need to check and make sure the fill tub on the unit is not frozen. If it is clear, and the icemaker is new, then it sounds like the water valve W10408179 is bad on the unit and will need to be replaced.

Hello Todd, This sounds like it may not be a dispense issue. If the water runs out in a small quantity every 8 to 12 hours, it may be the defrost drain stopped up. This can usually be fixed without any parts, just some time consumption. Remove the baskets from the bottom of the freezer compartment and look at the bottom of the back wall. There should be a grill you can look through to see the drain hole. if an ice build-up is present, this is a stopped up drain. You will need a 1'4 inch bit driver to remove the two screws that hold the back wall in. You will also need a hair dryer and a screwdriver, (any style as you will use this to heat with the hair dryer and transfer the heat to the ice in the drain hole). To avoid any damage to the unit, do not pull on the wall if ice is in the bottom of the unit. Use the hair dryer to melt the ice from it and then remove it. Now you have all of the access you need to clear the drain. Stand the screwdriver over the hole area and aim the hair dryer at the screwdriver shaft. Do not force the screwdriver down in the hold! This will puncture the drain hose and cause water to go in the floor instead of in the defrost drain pan. Once the ice in the hole has dropped and the screwdriver won't drop down on it's own any more, you can aim the hair dryer down the hole until the water in the drain area will disappear down the drain. Now pour a cup of hot water down the drain to remove any remaining ice. At this point, I like to chase the hole with a piece of weed eater line. Never push anything like a wire down the drain hole to avoid puncturing the drain hose which is made of rubber. After this whole process is complete, put one tablespoon of white vinegar in the drain to prevent the formation of algae which is a common cause of the drains restriction. At this point the job is done. Re-install the rear wall and be sure to set the freezer temperature at least one number warmer.

Hello Robert, There could be several different things causing this. If the ice maker finish is cracked, it can leak, which would require the replacement of the ice maker. If the water inlet valve is bad and closing too slowly, this can result in a slow overfill of the ice maker. If there is insufficient water to the water inlet valve, this will cause the valve to close slowly or in some cases, never completely close. So, you should first remove the water line from the refrigerator and put the end in a plastic trash can or bucket and turn the water back on to see if there is sufficient water pressure. If there is, force the ice maker to cycle and watch the end of the fill tube. If the water is dripping from the end of the fill tube, replace the water inlet valve W10408179. If not, replace the ice maker 4317943.
