The Damper Control is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It regulates the airflow between the freezer and refrigerator compartments, maintaining the appropriate temperatures in each section. This component ensures that cold air is distributed properly, contributing to the overall efficiency and performance of the refrigerator.

Common causes of a bad damper control can include wear and tear over time, electrical failures, or mechanical obstructions. A malfunctioning damper control can lead to temperature imbalances, affecting the preservation of food.

Symptoms of a bad damper control include:

  • Inconsistent temperatures between the freezer and refrigerator
  • Freezer overly cold while the refrigerator is too warm, or vice versa
  • Frost buildup in the refrigerator compartment
  • Unusual noises coming from the damper area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Joe, the damper control assembly should not be so loud that it can be heard from several rooms away. Replacing it should improve the noise level.

Hello Al, We will actually need you to please post a new question including the model number from the units' I.D. tag. This will allow us to see the exact configuration machine you have in your home. While it is still difficult to determine where the unit is leaking without being there, we can point out possible places where a leak can occur. The best way to locate a leak is by opening the unit and using a strong flashlight to locate a "water trail". You see, when a washer leaks, it does not leak pure water, but soapy water. There are normally mineral deposits also in the water. When the water evaporates, these impurities do not. They remain, leaving a trail up to where the leak originated. A strong flashlight will make them show up as a dull, sometimes white, line leading all the way to where the water exited the machine. As a technician, this is how I have located leaks over the past 30 years and can honestly say it is the best way to locate leaks since the water trails do not lie.

Mick, the damper should only open and close based on how much the refrigerator needs to cool down. If it is opening and closing non stop, you can test the thermistor to see if it is reading properly, but there is a chance that the control is the issue itself. The thermistor can be tested by testing for resistance.

freezer works, can hear fan going and notice frost covering the upper part of vents and some frost built up on walls. refrig part is not cooling at all, air damper was open [removed cover] and can manual open and close by changing the temp for frig. Can hear fan in back...unplugged from wall for bout 5 mins and replugged, could hear compressor come on. I'm thinking its not defrosting properly and may be a circuit board issue. I have a Maytag french door refrigerator Model # MFF2258VEW2, probably bout 5 years old.

David, it sounds like you have a defrost control issue. Take a look at the back panel of the freezer section and see it it is covered with ice..You will need to defrost the coils if they are iced up and then replace the defrost control that is located in the control panel, part number is WPW10503278

Harvey for Model Number JFC2070KRS

Refrigerator warm, freezer working okay. I cleaned off the coils under the refrigerator and removed all food in refrigerator compartment, but no change. We unplugged the unit for a night to make sure that ice build up was not the problem. The next day, the condensor fan and evaporator fan both would run, but still no cooling in refrigerator. Called technician who came out and inspected unit. He removed the cover from the damper cover and found that the damper was stuck closed. When it popped loose, it would cycle open and closed every 10 seconds or so. Technician said it was probably the control board and would return tomorrow with the replacement part. Over night, the unit cooled down to normal with the damper door still cycling every 10 seconds (control was at a 7). I ran the control down to a 5 and pretty soon the cycling stopped in midcycle, indicating that the sensor was probably still working. My question: is this cycling behavior normal or should the damper stay open until temperature has stabilized, at which point it closes?

Harvey, The damper should not be opening and closing every 10 seconds. It will stay open til it reaches proper temp then will close.

Gary, This type of issue would be more likely an air leak from outside the unit causing condensation that is building up and freezing the air ducts. You will want to check the door seals and the dispenser door to make sure that they do not have air leaks. As far as removing the damper control you would remove the cover over the damper and in the freezer remove the icemaker and the duct at the top of the unit that goes to the icemaker. There will be 4 tabs you have to release in the corner for the damper control to come out of the unit.

Tom, the model number you supplied is for a Frigidaire "french door" refrigerator. The "SY EF" error code indicates a problem with the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment. The evaporator fan operates on 8 to 12 VDC. You may want to start at the control board on the bottom of the refrigerator ans see if you have the DC voltage out of the board to the fan, or vice versa, to determine where the issue is.

Thing To Fix It for Model Number JS42CSFXDA

Jenn Air side by side. Question - When should the damper under the evaporator unit be open and when should it be closed? Had a problem with Ice build up and unit not defrosting. Managed to get everything working and now refrigerator is cool, but freezer is at 29 degrees and the damper is staying open. When I run it through the diagnostic codes - the damper opens and closes properly (so it is working). PS- The damper motor was making a noise, but the door was not opening when I ran the 09 & 10 codes. I removed the damper unit removed some ice build up, and let the unit warm up. Damper opened and closed when reinstalled and I ran the codes.

Thing to fix it, If the damper had ice on it, then this would cause the damper from opening and closing. The temp that the damper should open is when the unit gets warm enough in the refrigerator section which should be around 40 degrees and close when it gets to about 36 degrees. This issue could be caused by a faulty thermistor which is located under the controls.
