The Lid Latch Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It ensures that the washer lid is securely locked during operation, preventing it from being opened mid-cycle, which could cause water spills and interrupt the washing process. This component plays a vital role in the safety and functionality of the washing machine by ensuring that the lid remains closed during washing and spinning cycles.

Causes of a bad lid latch assembly can include regular wear and tear, electrical failures, or physical damage from forcefully opening or closing the lid. When the lid latch assembly is faulty, it can affect the washer's ability to start or complete a cycle properly.

Symptoms of a bad Lid Latch Assembly include:

  • The washer not starting or stopping mid-cycle
  • Error codes related to lid lock issues
  • The lid not locking or unlocking properly
  • The washer pausing unexpectedly during operation

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Lid Latch Assembly (Part Number: OEM15789930)

Dave, This issue sounds like it would be caused by a lid latch assembly. To test the lid lock you will need to access the wiring diagram in the console of the unit and run the Lid lock test on page 9. If the lid lock test fails then you will need to check the lid lock mechanism for obstruction or binding. Repair that as necessary. Unplug the washer remove the console to access the main control board. Visually check that the J15 connector is inserted all the way into the main control. If the visual check passes then remove the connector from J15 main control board. With an ohmmeter, verify the lid lock resistance values across the following J15 connector pins: Lock switch solenoid Resistance should be between 85-155 ohms measured between pins 1 and 3 of J15 connector Lock switch If locked should be 0 ohms resistance and if unlocked should show open circuit measured between the J15 pin 3 to 4. Lid switch Lid closed should read 0 ohms and lid open should show an open circuit from connector J15 pins 3 to 2.

Hello Anthony, You will need to put the unit into the diagnostic mode. This will be explained on the tech sheet in a plastic bag taped to the inside of the cabinet. It is easiest accessed by raising the main top and opening the ziplock bag it is in so it can be put back when you are finished. This way it will e there if ever needed again.

Hello Brian, While it may be possible to bypass the lid switch W10404050, it is not advisable since you can damage the electronics on the unit. The issue is that the control has to see the lid open between wash cycles or it will set up a fault code and not operate all over again. It does this by the use of a dual switch and the one side is only used to inform the electronic control that the lid has been opened since the last cycle. This is also a Kenmore unit which means that Sears employees are the only ones that can pull technical information such as the wiring diagram.

Scott C for Model Number Kenmore 110.20022012

My washer will start the cycle, but stop either before the spin cycle, or durring it. Sometimes it says the cycle is complete, other times not. I even had it happen before draining. I get different results depending on whether I set it to super or normal, heavy-duty or regular. Pretty sure it's the lid lock assembly, but not positive. It starts off locking the lid, but then mid-cycle it unlocks itself and halts the machine. I ran the diag test on the washer, but none of the lights were flashing upon completion of the tests.

Scott, Based on the information, it does sound like the lid lock may be the issue. You can perform the lid lock test on page 18 of the tech sheet which will tell you whether the lid lock is faulty or not. If this checks ok then you will want to replace the main control board as it would be the most likely cause if the lock is good.
