The Lid Latch Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It ensures that the washer lid is securely locked during operation, preventing it from being opened mid-cycle, which could cause water spills and interrupt the washing process. This component plays a vital role in the safety and functionality of the washing machine by ensuring that the lid remains closed during washing and spinning cycles.

Causes of a bad lid latch assembly can include regular wear and tear, electrical failures, or physical damage from forcefully opening or closing the lid. When the lid latch assembly is faulty, it can affect the washer's ability to start or complete a cycle properly.

Symptoms of a bad Lid Latch Assembly include:

  • The washer not starting or stopping mid-cycle
  • Error codes related to lid lock issues
  • The lid not locking or unlocking properly
  • The washer pausing unexpectedly during operation

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Lid Latch Assembly (Part Number: OEM15789930)

1 Answer

Kendall, This issue sounds like the door lock assembly could be on its way out. The control board is not sensing the units door being locked. The other thing it could be would be a faulty control board.

Brenda, You will want to check the suspension rods to make sure that they are in place properly and that they are not damaged. This would be the most likely cause for the issue.

Hello William, You will need to follow the troubleshooting instructions in the tech sheet. This can be found in a zip-lock baggie adhered to the inside front of the cabinet. After running the manual test mode on page 9, follow-up testing of the lid lock is found on page 18. Measurements in resistance are 85 to 155 ohms from J15-1 to J15-3, J15-3 to J15-4 should read 0 ohms locked and no connection when unlocked, and 0 ohms with the lid closed and no continuity with the lid open from J15-3 to J15-2.

Lid Latch Assembly. Part Number: AP5263307; Made by: Whirlpool. I purchased the above-listed part from your company this past weekend, and it arrived quickly. It is the right part for my Sears/Kenmore Whirlpool washing machine, of that I am certain. Did the install last night, after watching the video. When I installed the lid latch assembly to the underside of the hinged top, however, I did not have the latch strike engaged when I did so, as it was inconvenient to do so. Anyway, long story short, the lid does not close now, so we are not yet washing. Do I need to have the latch striker engaged when I install the lid latch assembly? Is my problem mechanical alignment, or is it electro-mechanical? Do they build these parts to fail? We have babied the machine for two years . . . Thank you!

Hello Mark. You will need to check the alignment of the latch assembly to the strike. There is something preventing the strike from going into the latch assembly.

Ed, You will want to access the tech sheet in the control panel of your unit. Once you have accessed it you will want to put the unit into a diagnostic mode and see if there are any stored error codes. It sounds like this will be the case with the unit and the error code will help to determine what exactly is going on.

Des, With the unit restarting at the end of the cycle, this issue would be with the main control board. The vibration is most likely a off balance load and the lid being cracked would not affect the unit as long as it does not interfere with the locking mechanism.
