Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Cooktop Spark Module (Part Number: OEM18034899)

Deborah, Since the top burners work, gas supply is not the issue. Your range regulator / valve assembly 3196544 doesn't have an isolation valve, so gas supply to the oven burner is not the issue. When you select a temperature on the thermostat or ERC/Clock, the circuit closes and produces 120 VAC to the igniter, the igniter should start to glow, when the igniter glows long enough to produce 2.5 to 3.0 amps (round igniter) usually takes less than 60 seconds, the amperage draw causes the internal bi metal switch, in the safety valve to open and the burner ignites (the igniter produces approx.2300 dgrs. F. if operating properly). If the igniter glows, but does not produce the proper amperage, the burner won't ignite. 95 % of gas oven cooking or temperature issues are attributed to weak or inoperative igniters.

Bryan for Model Number I have a kichen aid cook top w/ a whirlpool ignition module 8054321

I have eratic spark at my burners. I pulled off the top to witness what was happening. I sometimes see a spark jumping across the terminals at the module and sometimes see a jump of a spark from the ignition terminal to the rail that holds the burners. I also witness a flash ( or a spark within the spark module as everything is sparking. There is a little black spot on the back side of the module. I think I should replace my module and maybe insulate , with elec. tape a all connections. Thoughts?

Hello Bryan. You need to replace the module. Also, make sure there are no wires damaged on the unit. If so, replace any damaged wiring on the unit as well.

Hello Molly, You will first want to do a continuity check on the ignitor switches WP3191334. Unplug unit and test each switch for continuity. They should all read open. If you have one that reads closed then you have a bad switch and it would need to be replaced. If this checks ok look for a short to ground on the wiring to the spark module. If this checks ok then you will want to replace the spark module WP8053421. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

R.A. You're most likely on target. You won't really know if you have a damaged wire, until you remove the grates, caps and burners and remove the cooktop. but you'd want to have the spark module WP8053421 on hand
