The Drain Pump Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool front-loading washing machines. Located within the bottom of the tub housing, this assembly pumps water out through the drain hose during drain cycles. Efficient water removal relies on a functioning drain pump.

Causes of a drain pump failing can include clogs or mineral deposits obstructing the impeller over numerous washes. The electric motor inside may also degrade from extensive usage cycles.

Symptoms of a bad drain pump assembly include:

  • Retained water remaining in the bottom of the washer tub
  • Slow or incomplete draining at the end of cycles
  • Gurgling or grinding noises from underneath the tub area
  • Error codes related to overflow or drainage issues

This OEM Whirlpool part is compatible with KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, and some Kenmore front-loading washer models.

JOE A, The part (plug) you are requesting is not a part that has been made available as a replacement part, For this repair, you would have to use suitable parts from your local hardware or electrical supply co. to repair the wiring harness.

Norman, the drain hose will need to be inspected for how deep it is installed in the drain stand pipe to identify if it is "chugging" air due to being too far in. The drain hose can also be inspected for any kinks that may have occurred.

Mike, Water remaining in the pump and drain hose would be "normal" unless you had a drain problem in the plumbing. It wouldn't be a surprise to see a quart or so of water, even if the check valve in the pump is working properly. A couple of things you want to check before you go too far. Make sure the door is closing and locking after the first few minutes of the wash cycle. If the door doesn't remain locked during the cycle, the washer won't spin, leaving the clothes wet. You may have to set there a while, but you do need to make sure the washer is spinning (and not tumbling back and forth, or not "ramping up" to the high spin speed. If it tumbles instead of spinning this would indicate an open off balance switch, or a faulty control board. Let us know what you find, and we can get your machine running properly for you. Thanks,

You're not quite correct, the black flapper in the drain pump outlet is a "check Valve" or anti syphon device. It does not allow water to flush back into the washer, They can "stick" but that wouldn't normally cause a drain pump to fail. At present, the "flapper" is not available as a separate service part and you'll need to order the complete drain pump.

Bro. Ken for Model Number MAH6500AWW

From Service Mode diagnostics, I'm sure the pump is bad: lots of noise and no water movement with only the pump on. But due to space limitations, I literally have to move the washer to another room to work on it. Do you recommend getting related parts (e.g., pump-to-tub hose, rubber plug, bracket) just in case? I can't leave the washer in the other room so would have to button it up and move it back until additional parts arrived, and then repeat the process to work on it again.

Bro. Ken, The only reason you would need to get the hoses would be if you just wanted to go ahead and replace them while you are in there. The pump should be the only part required.

Gk for Model Number MAH5500BWW

My washer stopped draining. It will start a wash cycle but when it gets about to the rinse cycle it does not drain and it makes a noise like it is trying to ramp up but kinda like scraping or something. Does not drain and the nd code comes up. I used a wetvac and sucked all the water out of the tub through the drain tube so there is no hose obstruction. Tried it again same thing... start a wash cycle and when it gets to rinse function it stops, nd comes up and green light starts to blink on power button. Up until that moment was solid and I can hear the wax motor locking the door. Removed pump. No obstructions but took it completely apart and the prop has not resistance when I spin it. Also I can push and pull the rotor and there is about 1/8" play and if I wiggle it side to side there is a little bit of play there also. Is that normal tolerances for a washer pump?

GK, Based on the information it sounds like the issue is a faulty drain pump. Even though the drain pump looks good it could still be bad.

Hello Bill. Make sure the wiring is good and if so, and the hoses are not clogged, you will need to replace the control board.

George, The most likely cause for this issue would be a faulty water valve. If the control does not see the unit filled with water in approximately 14 minutes then it will cause this error which will also affect the spin cycle.

Jennifer, There are 2 terminals on the pump that if you apply 120 vac to it then you will be able to see if it is working. If it does not then replace the pump. If it does then check the pressure switch hose to make sure that it is not clogged and that the pressure switch is resetting to empty.
