The Flame Sensor is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool gas dryers. This component plays a critical safety role by monitoring the presence of the gas burner flame during the drying cycle.

Causes of needing to replace the flame sensor can include normal wear and tear over extended use, exposure to high temperatures or corrosion, or physical damage to the sensor itself.

Symptoms that may indicate a faulty flame sensor include:

  • The dryer not heating or producing heat properly
  • Error codes related to the gas system or ignition failure
  • The dryer shutting off unexpectedly during cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore gas dryer models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Flame Sensor (Part Number: OEM18024891)

Tommy, Yes, It could be a weak or faulty flame sensor WP338906. It actually sounds more like a weak set of gas valve coils 279834. You may want to take a few minutes and recheck. If the igniter glows, cycles off and doesn't glow again, then the flame sensor is most likely at fault. If the igniter glows and cycles off, then continues to cycle off and on, but there is no flame from the burner, then replace the weak gas valve coils.

Teng, One hour to dry a load isn't too far off of normal,35-40 minutes for a basic load of clothes is about normal. The first check you need to make sure the dryer isn't being overloaded. Then check and clean the exhaust vent system and vent hood. A restricted vent system and hood cause the dryer to take longer to dry because the airflow isn't correct and causes the dryer to overheat.

Hello Pat, The ignitor has to pull from 3.2 to 3.6 amps of current before the gas valve will open. In a nutshell, if the current is not high enough, the ignitor can glow red or orange without pulling enough current. The ignitor has to glow bright yellow to white hot before the gas valve will open. If you have a way to test the current, this will tell you for sure. If it is pulling sufficient current, the gas valve and/or the burner is in question.

Pat, You will want to test the flame sensor in which it should read closed for continuity when testing. If it reads open then it is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Hello Rich, This can be caused by low gas pressure, a bad gas valve coil 279834, or a failing gas valve WP8318277. The flame sensor will have nothing to do with this issue.
