The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Jerry for Model Number Sears 106.8462481 Side-by-side Refrigerator

Can this Relay Pack (W10613606) be an authorized substitute for the original "solid state overload start capacitor combination" (RC0410)"? My unit wouldn't come on and a local repairman replaced the RC0410 with this W10613606, and it started cooling again but the defrost cycle lasts far too long (freezer thaws out and refrig gets over 50F) and it has started staying in the defrost cycle permanently lately, where I have to unplug it, wait 15 minutes, plug it back in, and then, wait another 10 minutes and it starts to cool again, but then it gets down to 26F in the refrigerator. His solution is to replace thie W10613606 again - advice please?

Start devise has nothing to do with the defrost cycle. It sounds like the defrost timer is bad or the cold control is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Carol, First check and make sure you have the proper voltage supply to the refrigerator, the off-on-off-on is most likely due to a weak or worn out 12002782 / 12002782 overload/relay kit, but the" too cold no matter what setting" is most likely because the end of the temperature bulb has been dislodged from the mounting on the control assembly or a blockage in the damper assembly restricting the air flow to the bulb, and allowing the refrigerator to over cool because the air from the freezer doesn't reach the barrel and cycle the compressor off properly.

Ty for Model Number MSD2351HEW

Refrigerator seems okay, but makes a humming/buzzing sound when compressor starts up. Sometimes it will buzz again two to three times, but like I said, doesn't seem to be affecting the temperature in the fridge or freezer. The freezer door has been left ajar more then once, but seemed to have recovered except for buzzing. I have also removed back plate and vacuumed coils and also noticed compressor is hot to touch. Can you help? Start/Relay or compressor, something else?

Ty, The compressor clicking and buzzing but the unit still cooling sounds like the unit is short cycling. This would normally be caused by a freezer thermostat which would be part number WP67005335.

Kells, The most common reason for the refrigerator and freezer side to not work would be a faulty start relay on the compressor.

Hello Don, This can be due to a bad adaptive defrost control W11227239 or a bad compressor start relay W10613606. If you remove the start device and it rattles when you shake it, it is bad and will need to be replaced. If voltage is not being supplied to the compressor, the issue is more likely the adaptive defrost control board mentioned previously.
