The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Compressor Start Relay (Part Number: OEM17363361)

1 Answer

Scott, The if the humming noise is coming from the compressor then the most likely cause of failure would be a compressor. Normally when a start relay fails, the unit will make a clicking noise because the relay is not engaging. A loud hum or buzz will be a locked rotor.

Hello Donald. If the unit is shutting down until it cools off, you will need to order and replace the compressor on the unit. It is not due to a bad relay/overload on the unit.

Ignatius for Model Number Kenmore 79578544804

I asked a question last night about how to connect a Whirlpool w10603606 relay to my Kenmore refrigerator. Your answer was that there is an "L" marked on it. I have looked with a magnafing glass and could see nothing marked with an "L". My son looked as well and he did not see one either. The only thing marking a terminal in a red dot. Again, how do I know how to wire this relay. My refrigerator is made by LG and the old relay had a blue and a black wire connected to it. Thank you!

Ignatius for Model Number Kenmore Elite 79578544804

I have a Kenmore Elite refrigerator made by LG that is only 5 years old!! I paid a lot of money for it at the time and would really not want to throw it away!! The compressor relay went bad according to the service technician. The P/N for the LG relay is EBG44308701. This part is obsolite and can no longer be purchased. I have looked everywhere!! Doing some research, I found that whirlpool P/N W10613606 could work. A couple of people online have used this and it seemed to work for them. My question is, on the old part, I have 2 wires. A blue and a black. The black was connected to the terminal marked "L". The blue to the terminal marked "N". On the new whirlpool part, one of the terminals has a red dot on it. How do I know which wire would connect to this terminal? Can you help?

1 Answer

Hello Ignatius. If you look closely, there is a L marking on the relay. It should have a marking on it.

George, The capacitor should have a wire going to it that is wired into the auger motor itself. The capacitor should have wires coming off of it that internally attach to the motor and the blue and orange wires will attach to the capacitor. The only change to this may be if the auger motor was replaced previously.

Stanley for Model Number MBF2256HES

I ordered a replacement start-dev (W10613606) for my Maytag MBF2256HES as the compressor stopped cooling the fridge. Upon installation, I noticed that the unit previously had a 'hard start' capacitor setup installed. I can't figure out how the wiring goes to the new OEM part I want to install. I removed the 'hard start' kit and am left with two spliced white wires, and a blue wire. The oem Starter relay has two pins, one marked with a red dot. Does the blue wire go to the 'red' pin and the two white to the other? Please help! The wiring diagram shows blue and white wires to the connector, but not sure what pins they go to. Thank you.

1 Answer

Stanley, You are correct that the blue wire will go to where the red dot is and the white to the other pin. The issue will be that the start device will most likely not work and the compressor will need to be replaced. When a hard start device is put on a refrigerator it is for a temporarily getting the compressor to run until a compressor can be gotten for the unit. If a hard start is left on a unit or is put on a new compressor then the hard start will cause the compressor windings to fail.

Michael B for Model Number Maytag MSD2357HEQ

Came home to water on the floor and refrigerator not cooling. I tested the compressor and it seems to be fine. The compressor will hum for about 10 seconds and then stop. If its not the compressor wouldnt it be the start devise or capacitor and if so can I install a 3 in 1 relay to take care of the problem? After I put everything back together and it was unplugged for a couple hours it started cooling rather rapidly but woke up to water on the floor again and no cooling. Thank for help!!

1 Answer

Hello Michael. Do not use a 3 in 1 when your start device W10613606 is still available. If the new start device does not fix the unit, then the compressor is bad. Compressors can test good and actually be bad on the units.

Dan for Model Number sxd25aw

Hi. I have Amana sxd25aw side by side with overload and relay that have a total of 3 connections - top overload has black and blue wires together on one connection, bottom relay has grey wire on left connection, and black and white wires together on right connection. The replacement relay/overload/capacitor, WPL 67005560 has only two connections on the relay itself marked with L and N. Connection marked L is slightly larger than the one marked with N. How would I connect the existing wires to this new replacement? Thank you.

1 Answer

Hello Dan. W10613606 is not the correct part for your model. You need AP62293 which has been permanently discontinued by the manufacturer and we don't know of any source or replacement for the part. You can however use a 3 in 1 TJ90RCO210 on the unit.

Paul G for Model Number MBR2256KES

Refrigerator and freezer stopped cooling. Determined the compressor was not running. Removed the start cap. and relay and checked the continuity to each pin of the compressor coil. No shorts. I checked the cap. and it seems to work ok. slowly charged up and then fired. When I checked the relay coil I got no reading. I believe it has an open coil. Can I order just the relay and not the capacitor. The part number seems to be for the assembly. My main question is why any thing has failed on what I was told was a top of the line unit and bought only seven years ago. I am really disappointed in this failure. We had to throw out everything in the frig. and the freezer. I expected it to last a lot longer than this.

1 Answer

Paul, The manufacturer has the start device for your unit that comes with a new capacitor. If you want to just change out the relay you could use part number 8201786 which will have a couple of different start relays included.
