The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

I am about to give up my compressor as dead but I feel I am missing something. Everything works but the compressor does not start. There is a click followed by humming for 10 seconds then another click with no compressor start. The result is both the refrigerator and freezer is not cooling. I measured resistance over the terminals of the compressor and got 3.7, 4.9 and 8.0. Close to adding up. I also checked continuity of each pole with no alarm. I replaced the start/stop switch and capacitor with this model and have the same results. No compressor start up. I hate to invest more money on a hard start if the compressor is bad. Any ideas?

Hello Ron. By unplugging the unit, you are resetting the board in the unit. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the board WPW10503278 needs to be replaced.

Hello Paul, You will want to check the compressor to make sure that it is running. It may be hot but not running due to trying to start but not able to. You can pull the start relay off the side of the compressor and shake it next to your ear. If you hear an audible rattle then the start relay is bad. If the relay does not rattle then do an amp draw on compressor. If the compressor is drawing more than 8 amps then the compressor has failed and will need to be replaced.

My neighbor gave me this refrigerator when mine died. Hoping to fix it and make it work. Everything appears to work fine except that it does not get cold. I hear fans running inside and out. I don't hear the compressor run. Not sure where to start diagnosing. Previous owner suggested it needed a timer. Another said it's probably a compressor or freon line ...therefore, not worth repairing. I'd at least like to know for sure what the problem is before I part it out or sell for scrap metal...

Hello Rick, Based on the information provided, there could be a couple of different issues. If you are not hearing any noise, no fans, no compressor, then the unit may have stuck in a defrost cycle. If this is the case then you can try to unplug and plug back in after about 30 seconds and unit should come back on. If it does come back on you will need the control panel WPW10503278. If still does not cool then you will want to listen for fans and check compressor to ensure it is coming on. If it is not coming on then do amp draw on compressor. If you have above 8 amps on the draw then you need to replace the compressor W10309990. If the fans are running and you are seeing frost on the rear wall of freezer then you would have defrost failure. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
