The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello J.C., You need to pull the unit out from the wall and remove the compressor cover from the bottom rear of the unit. Place your hand on the compressor to see if it is running. If not, unplug the unit and remove the start device W10613606 from the compressor. You don't need to remove the wires from it. You just need to shake the device to see if it rattles. If it does, it will require replacement. If not, you need to check the voltage to it that comes from the freezer thermostat WP67005335 and ADC control W11227239.

Hello Alan, Special precaution: unplug the unit from the power supply or turn off the breaker and verify the power is no longer supplied to the unit. Remove the bale wire that retains the start device W10613606 and pull it from the side of the compressor. You may have to wiggle it back and forth and some use a flat blade screwdriver to pry it off. Remove one wire and place it on the correct terminal on the new start device. Remove the other wire and place it on the the correct terminal on the new start device. Plug the4 new start device onto the compressor and reinstall the bale wire retainer. Make sure the wire isn't crimping any wiring on the unit as this could cause a short. Reconnect the power supply and verify the compressor starts.

There is a yellow wire that will tell on your problem. If the yellow wire has no voltage on it replace the adaptive defrost control W11227239. If it has 120Vac, replace the temperature control WP67005335.

Chris for Model Number ABD2233DEW

My Amana refrigerator (top) freezer (bottom) model no. ABD2233DEW is not working. Both the refrigerator and freezer are warm. The fan next to the compressor is working as are the lights. There is a periodic buzz followed by a click. The compressor is very warm, but is not vibrating as one would expect. Is this symptomatic of a compressor problem or start relay/capacitor? I don't understand why the compressor is warm but doesn't seem to be running. Is it worth replacing the start relay/cap to see what happens or is the compressor bad. Thanks, Chris

Hi Johnathon. The defrost timer has been replaced with a electronic control board called an "Adaptive Defrost Timer". It handles approx. 6 different functions which defrost is mainly one of them. It is part # W11227239. It is located in the top LT. area of the controls. Then the defrost thermostat is part # WP67004757. It has to close in frozen temperatures to send the 120 vac to the defrost heater . It should ohm closed at 28-38-ohms . Heater part # is WP67004188. Thank You.
