The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

For Whirlpool Compressor Start Relay (Part Number: OEM17363361)

Thomas T. for Model Number 59671103101

Pulled up data on the compressor Model Number TPE1380YXA shows a run cap. is this part of the compressor staring device, I got this second hand with the hard start kit installed. The compressor comes on runs about 7 min frost just start to form on the coil, the compressor shuts off about every 15-20 min near it cycling, suspect the overload on compressor is shutting it down due to heat Fan is running refrigerant is charged, but compressor continues to cycle, is the frige still worth fixing or should I just look for replacement? I admit the starting device is a lot cheaper but only if it will resolve my problem.

1 Answer

Hello Thomas. If a hard start kit is installed, then more than likely, the compressor W10309990 is bad and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Hello Ricky. If you look at the old relay, you will see numbers on it. You will match the wire colors off the old one onto the new start device WPW10189190 using the numbers on the parts. Hope this helps.

Robert for Model Number Maytag MSD2736GRW / Compressor Embraco EGZ 100 HLP

The refrigerator and freezer is not getting cold. The temperature controls located in the refrigerator are set to 6 (0-10 being the options)for both the refrigerator and freezer. All Lights and fans are working. Air pathway from freezer to refrigerator is open and clear. Air pathway from fridge to freezer is clear and open. There is a clicking sound coming from the area near the compressor that sounds like a trip switch or breaker. Thanks for your time.

Dan for Model Number LSD 2615 HEB

Two days ago, I smelled a faint burning odor, like electrical insulators. When I returned home the next evening, the refrigerator was warm and everything had thawed. The light is on, the fans are blowing, but only warm air. I pulled the back panel and noticed that the vent was clogged with dust. However, the compressor compartment fan turned on when I turned the switch back on in the fridge. Also, the compressor was hot and I was able to feel a vibration as thought something inside was running, but it did not continue for long. I've been told that it could be a starting device, capacitor, or compressor. How would I know which part I need?

Frank for Model Number abc2037dts

Need some help: I have an Amana top Refrigerator bottom freezer and it is not cooling. I hear a buzz every few minutes, compressor would not turn on. The compressor was very hot, food had to be thrown in garbage. I disconnected the compressor starting device and run capacitor, allowing it to cool and then I re-installed the devices. The compressor turned on. The running temperature of the compressor is about 137 degrees as measured with a laser thermometer. The refrigerator was cooling again. It appears that when the refrigerator reaches temperature to defrost and the compressor turns off the same problem occurs all over again when the unit calls for the compressor to re-start. The buzzing starts again and the refrigerator and freezer gets warm. Please note: While the compressor is running, one copper pipe is very hot, and the other copper pipe is warm, yet the regrig is cooling (thought one pipe had to be cold). When cool, the compressor pins are within the ohms limit. Is it possible that the unit is low on refrigerant? Is it a bad compressor? Can it be the compressor start up device or capacitor???

1 Answer

Hello Frank. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the compressor W10160407 is bad and will need to be replaced. When the unit sits for a while, the pressure on the sealed system equalizes. Then when you plug the unit back up, the compressor does not have and pressure and starts ok. When the unit reaches correct temperature and shuts off, or goes through a defrost cycle, there is still some pressure in the system when the compressor comes on. If the compressor windings is bad, the compressor will not start, it just kicks out the overload. Hope this helps.

John for Model Number JFC2087HRS

Please help me confirm whether this compressor starting device (AP4079373 Made by WHIRLPOOL) is equivelent to the original parts on my jenn-air refrigerator. The parts my frig that would be replaced by this starting device are 1) two pronged 15 micro Farad capacitor (CMKS Shizui NKS85212) which connects to the back side of part number 5SP14T302TFM. This assembly connects to the compressor whose part number is TP141-AR-229-38 TPG1370YXA. PS I checked the ohms on the compressor's 3 pins and when I check two pins at a time I get around 7 Ohms in each case so I am suspecting (and hoping) the problem is in the relay/capacitor. I shook the capacitor, but it didn't make any rattling noise. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. John

1 Answer

Hello John. Yes, W10613606 is the correct starting device for your compressor, according to the model number you provided. If the compressor checked out good, then the start device should fix the problem. Hope this helps.
