The Range Infinite Control Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool ranges. This switch is used to control the heat levels of the surface burners, allowing for precise temperature adjustments. It works by regulating the electrical current that flows to the burner elements, enabling users to set the burners to their desired heat setting from low to high.

Symptoms of a failing Range Infinite Control Switch include:

  • The burner not heating up or getting too hot regardless of the setting
  • Inconsistent or fluctuating heat levels
  • The control knob feeling loose or not turning smoothly
  • The burner not turning on or off properly
  • Electrical sparking or unusual noises from the control switch area

Causes of a bad infinite control switch can include wear and tear from regular use, internal electrical failures, damage from overheating, or mechanical issues within the switch mechanism.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with some models from Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Infinite Control Switch (Part Number: OEM18022983)

Hello Quentin, This is normally caused by an infinite switch but can be caused by a failing limiter on a surface element. You can find out which elements circuit is causing the issue by removing the wires from all of the "P" terminals on the infinite switches. Make sure they cannot contact anything and power the unit back up. One at a time, touch the wires to the "P" terminals they were removed from. When the circuit causing the issue has the wire reconnected, the light will come on. You will either need to replace that infinite switch or the corresponding surface element. You can check the infinite switch with a resistance meter with the power to the unit OFF by testing from "P" to L1. With the switch in the off position, it should read open. With the switch turned on it should read 0 resistance.

Moose2red, If the element is going off and staying off then you would want to test the infinite switch to see if there is power still going to the element and if the switch is cycling. If it is not then the switch will be faulty and if it is cycling power then the element would be the issue.

Ralph, With just the oven not working on any setting then this will most likely be caused by a faulty thermostat WP9762215. If nothing on the range is working then start at the power supply checking for 240 Vac, then to the terminal block because you are likely dropping voltage.

Fran, First check or replace the oven temperature sensor WPW10181986. The sensor can loose it's calibration at higher temperatures and after years of usage and produce low and erratic oven temperatures.

Bob, This unit does not incorporate infinite switches but has user interface board part number 316445603KIT. You will want to check the inner burner to make sure that the burner is not bad.
