Dave H. for Model Number Whirlpool WRS973CIDM Side by side

The intake vent on the bottom of the refrigerator cavity rear panel keeps clogging with ice. Have defrosted it several times. This last time I removed the back panel of the refrigerator. The black evaporator coil was frozen solid about two inches from its' bottom. I don't see any defrost heater there. This is supposed to have Adaptive Defrost, but it seems to have a problem defrosting, only on the refrigerator side. Can you give me any help? Have spoken with appliance techs who have said that is a problem with these Whirlpool models. Thanks

Hello Dave, This sounds like the defrost drain may be freezing up on you. This would be accessed by the removal of the rear wall inside the freezer compartment. You can thaw the drain tube with a hairdryer or a clothes steamer. You should then chase the drain with a piece of weedeater line and pour in about 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to prevent any possible algae formation. You should install a heater extension 819043 to help prevent the issue again. You should also set the freezer one setting warmer if the freezer compartment average temperature is below 0°F.

Aditya K, If the compressor is running and not cycling as it should then there are several possible issues. The thing to do would be to locate the tech sheet that came with the refrigerator and follow the diagnostics guide in it to narrow down and solve the issue.

Tom, Check and make sure the doors close and seal properly, remove the crisper bins and check the floor of the refrigerator compartment for any debris (plastic wrappers, lettuce leaves, etc.) especially the rear corners, where the air tunnels are located. Check the top shelf of the refrigerator, make sure there's nothing large or tall in the center of the shelf blocking the air flow to the front of the compartment. If all's OK remove the grill cover in the center of the rear air tunnel "pumpkin" and check the auto damper WP67003410 / 8170845 Control, Damper, to see that the damper isn't stuck open.

Hello, depending on the model it can be located inside the control panel or down behind the kickplate. If you are unable to locate a defrost timer, the defrost cycle might be controlled by the board. Thanks!

Hello Jim. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the evaporator coils in the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Jason for Model Number Frigidaire FRT04L5DB0

I have a Frigidaire Model FRT04L5DB0 compact refrigerator that I bought from Lowe's about five years ago. I have diagnosed it with a bad defrost timer but I can't find the part. It is a 10A NON-IND 1/3hp 8 HOUR TIMER 100V 50/60Hz with SPEC NO. CD-2001-57 and the cycle is 7 MINUTES. The manufacturer is INVENSYS (QINGDAO) CONTROLS. The important part is the wiring harness pin-out is 2-3-4-1 (left to right with space between 4 and 1). That's important because everything else I've found online has a 2-1-4-3 pin-out and they're usually a different time period. Can you help me?

Everett, There is a dial on the defrost timer that you can turn to get it to go into or come out of defrost. If it is not manually doing this then you will need to replace the timer.
