The Timer is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is responsible for controlling the various cycles of the washing machine, ensuring that each phase, from washing to rinsing to spinning, occurs at the correct time and duration.

Causes of a bad timer can include electrical faults, wear and tear on the internal mechanisms, or damage due to power surges or moisture exposure. Over time, these issues can interfere with the timer's ability to accurately manage the washing cycles, leading to performance problems.

Symptoms of a bad timer include:

  • The washing machine not advancing through cycles
  • Incorrect cycle durations
  • The machine getting stuck in one part of the cycle
  • Unresponsive or erratic timer controls

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer (Part Number: OEM18039267)

Edward, You will want to test to see if there is 120 vac getting the water valve. If there is but no water is flowing through then check the screens of the valve to make sure that they are not clogged up with sediment or debris and if this is good then replace the water valve.

The cycle dial is not advancing anymore on our old Whirlpool washer and I'm pretty sure it's the timer that is broken. Unfortunately that part (WP3951603) is no longer available anywhere. However I found other timer models that look the same or very similar to the OEM one, for other washer brands or even Whirlpool (ex. WP8542050, WH12X10202). Is there any chance that one of these is compatible with my machine ? Or is this a case where you can't judge a part by its cover ?! Thanks for any help.

Long story: transmission went bad, replaced. Coupler is good, door switch is good, replaced clutch. Capacitor smelled when running after this fix, replaced. When it should shift into 'spin' (either in the rinse stage or in the spin stage) it sounds...funny. This is not the noise it makes while draining before the spin begins, which it does properly. If this happens, opening the door and closing it again will cause it to spin properly. It does not do this every time, just most. Only thing left I can think of is the timer? Seems it's not 'pausing' before spinning, or did I get a bad trasmission?

Hello William. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the drive tube W10820043 is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

My washer fills but will not switch to agitate. I have read lots of forum posts and decided it was between the lid switch and timer. I did however check pump and hoses and they were all fine. I took lid switch off and found that it was broken at the seam so I just replaced it. The washer is still doing the same thing though. It will fill then when it switches to agitate I hear a fast clicking sound which I also hear during agitation when it is working. If I manually move the timer slightly it starts to work. I believe it is the timer but wanted to see if it could be anything else.

Still having issues . . . replaced timer and impeller, but washer does not move to next cycle. It will work sometimes (if I unplug the machine, wait a few minutes, plug it back in), but seems to always stick on the drain cycle. There was one instance in which I open and closed the lid and that got it moving again; however, that trick no longer works. The timer will make a sound (like it wants to begin the next cycle) for about 20 seconds and then stops. Replacement timer was a refurbished unit. Thank you for the help!

Hello Justin, This sounds like debris in the drain pump. You should remove the hoses to inspect it properly. There is no other way to see the pump impeller. I would normally provide a part number for the drain pump, but this isn't possible without a model number. You can either re-post with the valid model number off of the units' I.D. tag, or you can call us at 1-877-477-7278 and one of our representatives will be happy to look the part number and pricing information up for you.

Hi. Sounds like you hear from the timer is a direct hint of immediate failure of the timer part # WP8542050. Bring up this timer on our website. Then scroll down to the bottom of the same page and see if your model # is included. If so then you need one. The SM825147-? is the serial #. The model # is right above it. Thank You.

Willie, A proper model number would be a big help. But if this washer is a Sears/Kenmore or Whirlpool washer(based on the part number you supplied) you want to start at the clutch assembly 285785 it may be slipping or worn out, and / or brake shoes 285438,they may be "locked" and not allowing the tub to spin. Here's a post from the APP Repair Forum that should be helpful. [http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/washer-repair/3265-replacing-direct-drive-washer-brake-shoes.html], Thanks
