The Timer is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This part controls the various cycles of the washing machine, including wash, rinse, and spin cycles, by regulating the amount of time each cycle runs.

Causes of a bad timer can include electrical malfunctions, wear and tear over time, or damage to the timer's internal mechanisms.

Symptoms of a bad timer include:

  • The washer not advancing through cycles
  • Cycles running too long or too short
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle
  • Inconsistent or unpredictable cycle timing

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer (Part Number: OEM18040359)

1 Answer

John, after the rinse fill and agitation has completed, there should be a drain phase followed by a spray and spin phase. If it is during this portion that the washer is not spinning, the timer WP8572976 would be the most likely cause of failure since it will spin properly in every other part of the cycles.

Jl for Model Number 110.26432502 - Kenmore

Ok, have a Kenmore 110.26432502. The symptom was no spin. Replaced the dogs on the spinner (they were gone), Replaced the clutch, brake and coupling. Tried cycling through the timer. All functions seem ok, except no tub spin. Let me qualify that. The tub DOES spin on the rinse cycle but does not spin on the final spin cycle. The pump does come on and opening the door stops all functions (which leads me to call the lid switch good). When I put my multimeter on the Y wire on the timer (P#8572976) I see 120V and the agitator/tub spin (on the drain before Rinse), however at the final Spin I see nothing on either the B/W wire which if im interpreting the drawing right should be the high speed spin? In short, everything but the HIGH speed spin at cycle ends works, is it the timer?

JL, Based on the testing that you did, this issue would be most likely caused by a faulty timer.

Hello Michael, The most common issue with this style unit is the lid switch. Be aware that the lid switch has to be actuated and if the lid hinge screws are loose or missing, this will cause the lid switch not to be properly activated. The next thing you need to check is the wires to the motor capacitor. If they lose connection it will cause the same issue. If you want to check the timer, put the unit into the spin cycle and test at the motor connector for 120Vac. If there is no voltage there, you need to back up the circuit to locate where the voltage stops. If there is voltage there, the motor has failed.

Hello Willard, You will want to do a continuity test on the lid switch WP8318084. With lid closed there should be continuity. If there is no continuity then the switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

Hello Francis. Check and make sure the lid switch is good on the unit. If not, replace the lid switch assembly. If it is good, see if there is power going to the motor on the unit. If there is power going to the motor and the motor does not run, replace the motor. If there is no power to the motor, and the timer is humming, you will need to replace the timer WP8572976 in the unit. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
