The Timer is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This part controls the various cycles of the washing machine, including wash, rinse, and spin cycles, by regulating the amount of time each cycle runs.

Causes of a bad timer can include electrical malfunctions, wear and tear over time, or damage to the timer's internal mechanisms.

Symptoms of a bad timer include:

  • The washer not advancing through cycles
  • Cycles running too long or too short
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle
  • Inconsistent or unpredictable cycle timing

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer (Part Number: OEM18040359)

Hello Stan. You will need to check and make sure the lid switch WP8318084 is not bad on the unit and it is working properly on the unit. If not, it will cause the unit not to agitate or spin out properly and the timer will not advance.

Hello Eugene, Judging from the information given, I would check the pressure switch and the lid switch. Without the wiring diagram, I can't pull the wiring diagram so I can't speculate further.

J.G. for Model Number Kenmore Washer 400 model #11028432700

In response to: First, allow the washer to fill and wash on a short small cycle, make sure the washer drains and spins, then stops and fill. -When you say 'make sure the washer drains and spins', don't you think I wish I could make that happen ? I just did a small load as you suggested. The cycles on the dial read SHORT / RINSE / SPIN. The dial & cycle stopped at about 1/4 before the word Rinse. Now the clothes are sitting in a tub of soapy water. I have a dot marked on the dial where everytime it has stopped, and this is the only time it stopped before the word rinse. The others were between Rinse and Spin.

Hi J.G. The previous technical question was asked to see if the unit still spins once you manually advance the timer ? If not then you may need a lid switch part # WP8318084. From what you said then you will need the timer part # WP8572976. Thank You.

JG, At the water level switch W10339251 , with the air dome hose, and wiring disconnected, there should be a "closed" circuit between the Purple and Pink terminals of the switch, with no water in the tub. When you blow into the attachment port on the switch, you should hear a click, and the circuit should open, and the circuit should "close" between the Purple and Tan terminals of the switch. As for the air dome hose, Check and make sure there are no kinks, twists, pinches in the hose. Diconnect it from the water level switch and blow into the end to clear any debris or build up in the hose or tub connection. You may also want to remove the hose, pinch one end closed and blow in it, to make sure there are no "pin holes" in the tube. Good Luck and Thanks

JG, The timer ? not yet. First, allow the washer to fill and wash on a short small cycle, make sure the washer drains and spins, then stops and fill. You may have a faulty water level switch or air tube W10339251 if the tub doesn't drain or the switch doesn't reset to "empty" it won't spin/drain. If the switch doesn't reset to empty, the washer won't fill in the rinse cycle or youmay also have a faulty water fill valve WP8578340 But I wouldn't start at the timer until these components are checked for operation. Thanks and Good Luck

Hello Gary. Check and make sure the pressure hose and air dome chamber is not clogged. If so, it can cause the unit to not fill. If it is clear, and the unit does not fill and starts to agitate, you will need to replace the pressure switch W10339251 on the unit. It tells the timer when the water level is correct to begin agitation. Hope this helps.

Hello Robert. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the timer WP8572976 could be bad. Make sure the unit is spinning out the water before the rinse cycle. If not, you could have a bad lid switch WP8318084. If it spins out properly, replace the timer. Hope this helps.

Brian, When the timer gets to the rinse cycle on the dial, does the washer fill up with water and agitate ? Most rinse cycles are automatically "cold" water fills, if you have clogged hose and fill valve screens or a bad water inlet valveWP8578340 , the washer won't fill and advance in the rinse cycle. Thanks
