  • Switches power to the motor, pump, and water valves as each step advances
  • Advances the cycle knob/dial through each phase
  • Can also help with skipping rinse/spin or a dial that's hard to turn

  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Remove the console/panel; pull off the knob and dial as needed to access the timer
  • Transfer wires one at a time from the old timer to the new; mount and secure the timer
  • Reassemble, restore power, and run a short cycle to verify operation

John, For this issue the most likely cause for no spin would be a thrust bearing that is faulty.

How do I get the timer knob off to remove the timer?? I've purchased a replacement timer based on other questions you responded to. I watched the repair video for replacing the timer, however a different timer was used in the video and they used needle nose pliers in a hole to pinch the snap clips. Mine has a similar hole on the back of the timer but I see no clips. I tried just pulling the knob straight out to remove it but no luck. Please help! I'm a silly knob away from what should be an easy replacement. What am I missing!

Steve, On your timer knob there is a center cap you pop off to find a retainer clip. Then remove the other dials to find two screws that will release your timer.

I have a Maytag Atlantis that leaves a big tub full of water at the end of the cycle for me/my wife. It appears it does not spin as well. If I push the timer in and turn all the way around to "SPIN" and pull the knob out it will then spin and drain. I should mention this does not happen every load. We can sometimes go 2 or 3 weeks and it functions perfectly and then all the sudden, like last Sunday, all 3 loads I did the tub was full of water. Have been doing some reading up on the subject and it seems to be the timer or the thrust bearing, but I can not pin point which for sure. Any advice? Thanks in advance! Dave

Dave, With the issue that you are having, it sounds likely that the issue will be that the timer has a stuck contact which is making the unit not spin properly.

Hello Ralph. You will need to check the thrust bearing kit 12002213 and see if it is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Hello Kevin. If the only cycle not woring is agitate, it does sound like the timer. As for the green wire, it clips onto the metal back plate of the control panel for grounding.

ESP, Yes, it could be a timer WP22003499 issue. Once you remove the control panel from the console, you should find the wiring diagram inside. You should then test the water level switch 22002705 circuits, put the timer dial in a fill and wash cycle, pull out the knob, and check the timer terminal / contact circuits using the timeer cam chart.

Hello Joe, There could be a couple of things that would cause this issue. Based on the information it sounds like the motor is overheating. Things that could cause this is too low or high voltage coming to the motor. You should have 120 +/- 10 percent vac. A stuck contact on the timer causing unit to send conflicting voltage to the motor spin and agitate signal. A bad pump that may be making noise and causing drag on the motor. Or a bad thrust bearing which is allowing the brake to not release enough and causing a drag. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

My Maytag washer is 12 years old. Late last year we have noticed that the washer will finish with a tub full of water. It seems the wash only agitate and does not rinse or spin. We have to re-do the rinse and spin to finish the wash. This occurs on any program selected (color, white or delicate). The washer will spin and drain the tub fine and it does agitate. Today I was able to finish a wash by opening and closing the lid which will trigger the next cycle to start in middle of the wash. What I do is open the lid in the middle of the agitate to spin and rinse. When the arrow on the knob reaches the Rinse line I open the lid and close to activate the rinse. Then when the arrow reaches the SPIN white line I open and close the lid again to start the SPIN. This seems to work in order to finish a good wash. Is this a timer switch problem or a switch lid problem. Thank you for your help.

Sat R, Your post information would indicate a failed contact in the timer WP22003499. The contact is not "opening" at the pause portion of the cycle and the motor will continue to agitate, because it can't reverse direction. To remove the timer, first you need to unplug the power cord. Carefully remove the timer knob insert WP22001664 with a small flat blade screwdriver, then remove the locking pin 22002997 using the same method and then slide the knob and skirt off the timer shaft. Remove the three phillipshead screws across the back edge of the control panel and pull the top towards you. Lay the control panel on the top of the washer with a rag under it , and disconnect the wiring harness block from the timer. Remove the one mounting screw and lift the alignment tab with the screwdriver and lift the timer out of the console. Reverse the procedure and test the washer for proper operation and leaks.
