The Lid Switch Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This safety feature is designed to prevent the washer from operating when the lid is open. It ensures that the spinning cycle can only commence once the lid is securely closed, protecting users from potential injuries.

Over time, the lid switch assembly can fail due to normal wear and tear, accidental damage, or from being tampered with.

Symptoms of a bad Lid Switch Assembly include:

  • The washing machine does not start or stops suddenly during the cycle.
  • The washer does not spin, even though it fills and agitates.
  • The machine operates regardless of the lid's position, indicating a bypass or failure in the safety mechanism.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Hello Phil. Yes, the lid switch WP3949238 installs under the top panel on the right side of the opening. Disconnect the power to the unit. Remove the two screws in the back corners of the control panel securing the control panel. Pull the control panel forward and flip it backwards. Next unplug the lid switch and remove the two brass colored clips securing the cabinet to the back wall using a flat blade screwdriver to pry them out. Pull on the front of the cabinet and slide the cabinet off the frame of the washer. You can now access and replace the lid switch. Reinstall in reverse order. Hope this helps.

Norman for Model Number whirlpool super capacity plus

i have the whirlpool super capacity plus and purchased this lid switch assembly, AP3100001 (3949238). upon installing i noticed 2 differences in the new assy vs the older failed assy. the first, it was ~3 inches shorter, the second, it had a curved metal piece over the switch lever. there are no additional serial or model numbers on the washer. do i have the correct part? i believe if i pry off the metal, it may just fit, but it would be "dangling" vs secured onto the frame with the metal clipings of the housing.
