Figured it was either the capacitor and/or motor. Ordered both parts to be sure. tried changing the capacitor first; same problem. Replaced the motor (leaving the new capacitor in place). This is a rubber gasket that seals around the door vent opening on a dishwasher, preventing steam and moisture from escaping into areas where they can cause damage. I unscrewed the fastening screws and was surprised to see that the front part of the door (external metal part) sort of slumped downward - I thought the front metal part of the door would be secured to the hinges but it is not.
