This is an extension piece for the ice maker shut-off arm inside the freezer compartment. It lengthens the sensing arm so it can properly detect when the ice bin is full and signal the ice maker to stop producing ice. Replace this extension if the ice maker continuously produces ice and overfills the bin, or if the original extension is broken or missing.

I replaced the thermostat switch first, which helped, but sometimes the unit would not start, even after power down for 15 minutes. I inspected the evaporator, and it showed no signs of icing. Cleared the dust from the coils. Replaced the run capacitor (and also the start device assembly.) This fixed the problem and now unit cycles as expected.
